Ok, so the best way to cool your laptop down is to turn it off for a while right? lol Well my laptop was getting hot and the fan seemed to be working overtime after short usage on it. I always keep my laptop on a table of some discription so I couldn't understand why it was getting so hot so quickly. Anyway I have ended up buying a cooling mat for it which is filled with gel beads which go soft when heated. When this happens I turn the laptop off and leave it to cool down properly before logging in again. I guess I was online longer than I had realised most of the time. The mat seems to work pretty well but I know there are other methods of cooling down your pc out there. What do you do to cool your laptop down?

I bought a new roast pan........one of those ones that will fit a large turkey. Included with it was a grill on the bottom that sat on little feet about an inch off the bottom of the pan. It was removable. I didn't really need it for the roast pan, so I sit my laptop on it on my desk or my lap or wherever and just that little bit of space keeps the air flowing under my computer and keeps my laptop much cooler for much longer..............

You can buy them without having to get the roast pan too. lol Make sure they have rubber/silicone feet on them though so they don't scratch or 'wander around' easily. LOL

brilliant idea sparks think I might try the idea of a grill!

I remember the first laptop I ever had was designed VERY poorly. The vents were on the BOTTOM. How can anything cool down when the vents are on the bottom, thereby, not allowing release of the hot air?? It would get sooooo overheated that to prevent damage my laptop would shut itself down of it's own accord. Now I have a laptop with the vents on the side and even though the air coming out of it is VERY hot my laptop has not, as yet, overheated. It's doing very well and I love it. Isn't that stupid? Why would they design it like that? It doesn't make any sense. I hope you find something that helps you with the problem. Purrs, Catwoman=^..^= & Mija

Hey, Well my laptop only has about one fan, but when I can feel my laptop starting to heat up a little and starts to make more noise, I simply switch it to power saving mode which makes the CPU to use only 20% of it. Then I can hear straight away, the fan slows right down and cools. Make sure you have a good day, Happy Lotting!!

Just buy cooling fan my friend. I think that is the best way to prevent your laptop being hot easily. Just try to ask in computer store.

Mine is elevated about 3 inches of the desk. So far this one does not get too hot. My last one had to have a fan constantly blowing on it or it would shut down

Hi there K46620 3 Inches of the desk? Wow that's a good idea how have you done that? I think the more distance you can get under the bottom of your laptop to anything the better. Thanks for your response

I just placed it on a stand. Plenty of air circulation can get under there now. When it sits on the desk the heat is reflected back up to the laptop.

I work on my laptop for more than 9 hours per day and it usually gets hot but there are two fans so it gets cold by itself and I do not need to switch it off even for a while so I am just happy to have made a good decision after all to buy this second laptop.
@Humbug25 (12540)

Hi there med889 Do you mean you now have two laptops? That is a good idea, work from one laptop whilst the other cools down haha. I think as laptops get older they don't seem to be able to cope with cooling itself down! Thanks med

I have two laptops but I work mostly on the one which I just bought this year itself. There are two fans in it and I do not need to switch off when it becomes hot become it cools down rapidly too.

I have this lap top stand with three fans, which cool the lap top. I have a three fan model, but there are five fan and even seven fan models in the market. You have to fix it to the usb port for it to work. These are all chinese products, which is available locally in India.

Hi there rameshkumaar57 Do you find that this works adequatly? I looked into getting one but found them to be a bit expensive. Thanks for your response

Hambug, it is quite cheap in India, my three fan lap top holder just cost me Rs500/ which is something like $(U.S)10, the five fans and the seven fans cost Rs.750/ and 900 respectively. It is also available in ebay.

I get a small towel and wet it. Then freeze it flat i the freezer. Wrap it in a plastic bag with i seal shut. Get another towel for on top. put the freezer towel on the table, put the other towel on top and put my laptop on it. It keeps it really cool and I didn't spend a cent on it.

I have several fans that I aim towards me and the computer. I also use it on a table with a small electric personal fan aimed at the underside. I prop it up with two small pieces of wood (cedar blocks that you would put in with your wool garments). It works wonderfully! My previous laptop ( a Toshiba) was really crabby about being allowed to get hot, so I tried the fans and wood blocks with it and it solved the problem. I got the personal fan at Wal Mart for around $5, and I always haunt thrift shops and found the other two for about $5 total. Can you put the cooling mat in the freezer? It would keep the computer cooler longer if you can.

If your laptop is heating up use air pressure cans to clean out the dust on the fans and if even that does not changes anything please get the fams on the cpu checked for under performance

i should knock on wood after answering this one it seems since my son got me this nice pc desk mine dont heat up so bad now. i do turn it off a while if it feels a little extra hot but it seldom happens now. one guy told me, here on mylot a few months ago to put cig. boxes under each corner so air could get under it. i used to do that before my nice desk

Hi ya bunnybon7 Maybe the answer would be have a desk with like a hole in it so the air can ciculate but so big the laptop would fall through hahaha Thanks

Hello humbug! My husbands old laptop was broken so when I got here with him, he bought me a new laptop. I have been using it for 2 months now and I never experienced overheating. I don't have a job yet so I am always in front of the computer most of the time. But what you said really helps a lot.

Morning Humbug, well I had a very strange noise emanating from my laptop a couple of weeks ago and immediately thought it was going to die on me. So I popped a quick question on here about it, help was immediately at hand with the idea the fan was overheating. I use the laptop on a cusion on my knees so was advised to put a book between laptop and cushion and it worked straight away, with no expense involved.

Good morning to you thea09 Yes I am sure a book would work just as well but you have to get it positioned correctly so you are not covering the vents! A friend of mine actually burnt his leg from having the laptop on his lap. Why call them a laptop if you can't actually use them on your lap eh? LOL Mind you it is not the most comfortable position to be in!! Cheers thea

He he! I can just imagine steam coming out of your fingers as you are typing away as fast as lightening! I don't have a laptop, I have a Mac computer which sits on my desk and I don't have a problem with it overheating, I guess you only get that with laptops? I like the idea of a cooling mat? Do they do human ones too that you can wrap around yourself, as Wolfie gets overheated and it's not time of the month for me or a full moon or I get excited quick, it's the fact that I can't tolerate the heat. I hope you cool down fast, sorry I hope your laptop cools down ;0)

hi humbug love your user name and your avatar. wow.I have a big computer not a lap top but we have had such hot weather mine also gets hot after so many hours of being used. the only thing I know to do for the big ones is just to turn it off for an hour or two. the box that runs me on cable also seems to get very hot during this tiresome heat wave here in california. some of that due to the wild fires too. wish they had something similar to what you are using to cool your laptop for the big computers. If you are like me you intend to be on for only awhile then realize you have been on for hours. good luck with your laptop

Howdy Hatley Thanks for the compliment, I am quite partial to my username and avatar. I wish I could say the same for the reason for my laptop overheating due to the weather but it sure isn't the case in rainy old England I'm afraid. Hmm maybe you should invent something to cool down desk tops then Thanks for your response

Your post made me think about my terrible CPU branded AMD,it's always got a high temperature and hard to come down.I'm a lazy person, for me,the only way is open less browser tab as possible as I could.Sometimes I even want to foist it into icebox. But I really did this, but the target is not CPU,it's a hard disk on my old PC What's your laptop brand?IBM,MAC or Acer? I am always thinking a problem,is there exist a method that can help turn a PC into a refrigerator(Good!!!)Then we will never worry about their temperature and there is no need to have any cooler
