Cats and Feline Leukemia

Here's a little story for all you cat lovers out there.
Sometime back one of our wonderful cats named Stockings was refusing to eat and was losing weight terribly. Because of this we took him into see the vet. After hundreds of dollars in test the vet called us to let us know the news was not good.
She informed us that Stockings had feline leukemia and that the possibility of him surviving the week was pretty much not going to happen and her suggestion was to put him to sleep.
This was devastating to us, since we had this little guy since the actual day of his birth and it was like being told your child was dying. We both cried about it and prayed about it and the next day we both knew without saying a word, what we had decided.
Our decision was that we would not be the ones to decide if he lived or died and that we would make him as comfortable as possible and give him all the love we had in our hearts for him. We decided that this is what he would have wanted, to die with his family.
Four years later, we've never been happier over a decision, because Stockings did not die and in fact seems to be healthier and spunkier than ever. I talked to a different vet later and was told that she never suggest putting them down because some cats have lived longer than those without the disease. So, should you ever receive such news from your vet and the suggestion is to put down your baby, you might want to reconsider taking the advice of the vet.

What's your baby's name?
Did the vet suggest to put him down or did we just have an over zealous vet?
Glad that both of our cats are doing well.

Your precious baby Stockings I'm soooo happy for you. To lose a friend/ animal is hard. But to have to decide to put them down is even worst. And yes cats with leukemia can survive a long time. My friend as well as yours has a cat with leukemia. IT has it's good days as well. They have special meds they give her and she's still alive for over a year now.
I'm happy for you that you didn't have to endure the lost of your cat not quite yet. I couldn't imagine if I lost my little baby kitty. And nor do I want too.

I"m so happy for you that he is doing so much better. Now I have though about making that decision when I was little. And sometimes it seems like the right thing to do. TO let go of an animal because of how much they are in pain.. But than I quess that'd be wrong.. Because if we are in pain and not feeling good do we put our own selves down? of course not.. Actually that's pretty messed up lol.

Yes, it was a struggle to try and make that decision one of the hardest things we had to do. I know we all have to go some day, including our pets, but being the ones making that decision is not right and cruel for all involved.
As for Stockings, he perked up so much, he doesn't even require meds.
