Are plastic biodegradable?

Many companies would like to support the Go Green Movement but they are using plastics. What best ways to go with the flow is by tagging their packaging BIODEGRADABLE but are they really? When I was in grade school my science teacher thought us that it is non-biodegrable however now am confused. Are they biodegradable? Or are they NOn-biodegradable?
