Mom's food - Are all the moms great cooks?

My mum was a master of many things. She used to keep the house squeaky clean and always arrange and place the things in their proper places. She was always neat and well read too. She can sew beautiful dresses and her embroidery works are excellent. She used to make great sweaters and I used to wear her sweaters and mufflers with great pride when I was young. She was a great mother and I miss her still. But she cannot cook at all? It was a joint family and my aunt makes the food and she was a great cook. Right now my wife is easily the best cook in the world. When I go through the discussions here about mom's food I always wonder my mother alone was a bad cook? Is it necessary that all the mothers should great cooks? How about your mother please?

Hello balasri! Don't worry, it's not only your mom who is a bad cook. My mom is not a good cook either. My dad always cook the best and my sister got it from him. Unfortunately, I got my mom's cooking ability so someday, I would be a bad cook mom..hehehe

Well,i think all mothers are good cook and administrator. When we are far away from them or when they are not alive then we feel what they were. Some mother may not be a good cook but they are good in other things.Mothers are special and their touch, their work, their feeling and their everythings are different from others as far as i think.I am also a mother and my children likes my cooking and mine everythings but i miss my mother's cooking and pickels.

This is indeed a good topic.Let me first answer your question,no not all mothers are good cooks.I suppose each individual has different preferences.Your mother seems to have had alot of other talents.Maybe since she had others in the family to do it she may not have had the inclination to do it.To be a good cook one has to have an interest in it.I know so many households where the husbands are excellent cooks and the wives are not.I have so many of my friends who just cannot cook for nuts. They either have cooks at home or they manage by buying food from out.Atleast we should appreciate the fact that she took care of the house and did everything else except cook. There are many who will not cook and will not do any work around the house. That tells upon the person. My mother used to be an excellent cook once upon a time.I think she got fed up and just gave up on it and always had someone cook for her.

Not this mother! I am a mum and no, I’m not a great cook at all! I cook because I have to but I don’t enjoy it at all in fact I would rather clean the kitchen and wash the dishes than prepare the food! I love keeping my house spotless and all the other things associated with household chores but I detest meal preparation! My mother on the other hand is a fantastic cook although she too says she hates it; the way I see it, if this is the way she cooks and she doesn’t like doing it, what would she be like if she loved it? Her meals are scrumptious, she’s Italian and her cooking depicts her culture. I love going to mum’s for food; we’re going there for lunch on Sunday because it’s Father’s Day and she is preparing some delicacies for my Dad and her son in law! Looking forward to that one...

i should say that i am so like ur mom. i am very good in the cleaning, sewing, embroidery, gardening "departments" of the house ... but honestly, i cannot cook as expertly as other moms do. i only cook for ourselves, just to cure hunger but cooking as an expert cook does... that i cannot do! hahahaha. incidentally, my late husband cooks well.

My mother could do anything. She could cook, clean, sew and do almost anything in the house. Unfortunately she didn't "mother" very well. Then I grew up, got married and struggle with cooking and hate to sew. Am not a domestic person at all here. However, I did a great job of "mothering" our now three grown daughters. Guess we all have flaws and make up for the flaw in other areas.

Hi Bala, A Mum without knowing cooking, I thought that it is impossible and after reading your discussion I changed my stand. I think your mother is lucky without doing cooking, you know it is really a head ache, I am not meaning the works but the ideas, what to prepare as curry everyday, it should be different, tasty and healthy too. Your mother was great in all other activities and I think she lived in joint family so not knowing the cooking never a problem for you people. There must be somebody to take care of it.

I can understand your point Srikala. Not everyone is so lucky to have someone to take over this headache.I know how much of time my wife spends every day in decision making in the kitchen.

I don't think all moms, have the skills of good cooking. Even do we cannot denied that most moms, know how to cook but not all of them great. It is necessary that all moms, should know how to cook because this is for their family and most specially for children if they have...have a nice day!

Well I am happy that at least you have a mother who cooks great regardless of her being a mother in law or a mother by law.

Not all moms are great cooks, It's just that when we were young, the first meals we ever ate were cooked by our mothers, and women are the ones in charge of the kitchen, so giving the notion that mothers really are great cooks. This applies to majority, but again, not to all..

It is funny because your mom is very similar to me in regards to keeping the house clean and great organization skills ,but I can't cook either ,but my mom was the opposite of me ,but was a great cook ,and I still miss her cooking. My mom liked the fact that I liked to clean ,so she never cared about teaching me how to cook. In my house my husband is usually the one cooking ,and he always tells me that I'm lucky that he loves me so much.

Hello balasri. When my mother was young, she was better at cooking, but now my mother does not cook as well as she used to, except a few dishes that she really cooks well. My wife and my mother-in-law are very good at cooking. I love all the dishes they cook for us. It is the same with my sister's cooking skill, great.

My mom is a great cook, she's very artistic with the food that she cooks. Her home is very neat and tidy but she's not at all artistic. My sister keeps a great house and is a great cook, in fact every time I'm at her house she feels the need to feed me. My sister is an amazing artist too. Me I cook just average meals and my house is messy. But I like to knit and I'm very good at it.

I don't know but it's Moms requisite to cook for their children and for husband. also husband starts do the cooking too than just wifes. i feel bad knowing that you lost your mom. as long as moms can cook good food, it doesn't have to be the best and that's it........

Absolutely not. My mom is an adequate but hardly what you would call 'good' cook. It is hardly a requirement for being a mother to be able to cook. I mean, fathers can cook too, right? Saying that every mother should be a good cook is like saying every mother should stay at home, look after the children and always have her husband's slippers warmed up by the fire when he comes home! Every woman has different talents. As you said, your mother was an excellent seamstress but not a good cook. I'm sure there are plenty of mothers out there who are the exact opposite - amazing cooks but unable to sew to save their lives.

Absolutely. The cooking skill alone doen't define a good mother.
