Rangel Says Opposition to Health Care Reform is Racism

I've seen it posted here recently that some don't think that the left is calling people racist for disagreeing with Obama's policies. They say that we are just fueling the racism charge by saying we've been accused of racism, when no one has done that. Well, Charlie Rangel has done it: "Some Americans have not gotten over the fact that Obama is president of the United States. They go to sleep wondering, 'How did this happen?' " Rangel (D-Manhattan) said Tuesday. Rangel said that people opposed to the health care reform were acting out of "a bias, a prejudice, an emotional feeling." He further went on to remark that he's not going to pay any attention to what the American people think, we're too misguided and prejudicial. He's going to look beyond that nd do what he wants to do, not what we want done. "We're going to have to move forward notwithstanding that," said Rangel, the powerful chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee and a chief health-care negotiator.Rangel then likened the battle over health-care expansion for the uninsured to the fight for civil rights. "Why do we have to wait for the right to vote? Why can't we get what God has given us? That is the right to live as human beings and not negotiate with white southerners and not count the votes. Just do the right thing," he said. Hey, what can I add to those remarks? His arrogance and ignorance speak for themselves. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/09/03/rangel-prejudice-obama-halting-health-care-reform/?test=latestnews

I feel that those opposed to the health care reform just don't understand what it's like to be a person without health care, but I wouldn't call it racism at all. When it comes to things like this it's more a fact of "Are they going to be stealing my money" than "A black guy wants it so I can't agree."

I don't have any health insurance and I don't support the health care reform. It's just as much a stereotype to believe that only rich people with insurance oppose the plan as it is to think people are racist if they don't agree with Obama. Some of us - actually, most of us - oppose it because it's a bad piece of legislation with provisions that threaten our privacy and our liberty. It does not accomplish reform, it simply puts all the control in the hands of the federal government, the same people who can't manage "cash for clunkers" or run a post office without losing money. It has nothing to do with racism, at least you recognize that. I would like you to know that, for me at least, it also has nothing to do with whether or not I would get anything out of it or if I would be paying for it. I wouldn't be paying for it, I would benefit in terms of health insurance, but it's detrimental to my nation. I care about what is right and good for the US. I care about the Constitution and the rights guaranteed to us in that document. I care about governmental control of our lives and I care about my children growing up in an America I can recognize.

The number-one reason I oppose the government's version of reform: I'm tired of being treated like I'm stupid. They rushed through that stimulus bill as quickly as they possibly could. Not even a year and we're already finding out some VERY distrubing things about that! For starters, a terrorist (Yes, a legitimate TERRORIST) had a hand in writing the bill! Why weren't the American people told not only that our elected officials wouldn't be reading it, but that they weren't even writing it!? I think we deserved to know that it was being outsourced to a group made up of at least a diehard communist and a terrorist. And another piece of recent news, it turns out that the money set aside for the "arts" is being used to promote the President's agenda! That's right; our taxpayer dollars, supposedly used to keep the "arts" thriving, are being used to create mass pro-Obama/pro-administration pieces. Not to even mention that the only jobs being created with stimulus funds are government jobs. If this was all that was wrong with the stimulus, it's more than enough to call it a huge mistake, in my opinion. And this is just stimulus. What sort of stuff do they have going on with the healthcare bill? Who wrote it? Who is it "really" for? They can say that it's for the uninsured and the American people's benefit until they're blue in the face. Show me an honest politician and I'll show you a person you need to run a deeper background check on. I'm 100% for reform. I want every American citizen not only insured, but paying fair rates for insurance and not being turned away for preexisting conditions. I do not trust the government--this particular government or ANY American government--to do that. They can't. They will have to outsource it to special interest. Who wants Obama's health and science czars making decisions? Heaven forbid his green jobs czar gets to make the call. By his own admission, Native and African Americans take full precedence over evil, capitalist whites. Ugg. It goes on and on. myLot would cut me short before I could finish illustrating the "con" side of the argument. The only "pro" would be, possibly, everyone having healthcare. Ironically, that's not even close to being a guarantee in this or any other bill, lest the government forces you to purchase insurance, and then we're left with another debate entirely. I'm sneaking over the border into Mexico. :P

I mostly try to just convince myself that "this happens in government all of the time and that's the way life is and there is nothing that complaining about it will do to help my personal situation." But yes, I am ABSOLUTELY running off to Canada if things get too bad. Or Mexico, as you said. I could definitely see myself living at Cozumel and working at a tourist attraction for all of the cruise ships that come through!

Rangel is a prime example of an ignorant person who is perpetrating racism in this country. IMO racism has worsened since people like Rangel keep fanning the flames with his garbage. We know that the proposed Obamacare is very threatening to America's seniors however he is one of the lucky ones who probably has enough money not to worry about the problems most seniors face.

I agree but to a point I really do not think it is ALL liberals just the ignorant ones who do not have the brain to debate an issue in an educated, civilized manner

Martin Luther King, Jr. would roll over in his grave if he knew how his message was being distorted and twisted by all of the liberals in this country. It's pathetic.

I doubt anyone is really surprised by this. Rangel should be in prison right now. He's a crook and a liar.

Isn't it funny that there are no discussions about why he should resign? There are a few about Mark Sanford, some wanted Sen. Ensign to resign but nobody thinks Rangel should be kicked to the curb.

That's because democrats don't mind having criminals represent them. He joins a long list of crooks who are reelected by democrats like Marion Barry of DC. When republicans find jerks like this among their number they oust them ASAP.

Well, I guess Chucky-boy isn't going to have a job the next time he's up for re-election. No one gets away with insulting the intelligence of the American people, and he's going to be no exception. His arrogance is going to be his downfall, as well as the downfall of his comrades.

I just hope the Obama's fans notice the same arrogance when his next election come up unless of course he gets impeached first!

I don't know about him, but there is a huge amount of prejudice against what it is like living under socialized healthcare because of the outright lies people believe about it over here. I lived in England 30 years, and now live in America. I know what I believe very clearly now I have lived on both sides! However, I think you are right on the racism thing - not agreeing with the President does not make you a racist, it is actually people who accuse people of racism that are even bringing it up when it wasn't even relevant! Oh, and not believing in a system where you have be rich to be sick doesn't make me a communist...lol....we DO like to throw labels around, all of us, in some form, don't we?! (Sorry, just got a bit sick of hearing that since this whole healthcare fuss started!)

HOW do idiots like Rangel continue in public office?? Not accusing him of anything, but maybe he didn't think it was worth waiting for the vote... Bigger question: How can anyone hear or read what he says and not know what kind of an arrogant airhead he is? It's amazing.

If I called my boss a moron in public or in private I would be out of a job so fast my feet would not touch the ground. Too bad that we have to wait until 2010 to get rid of some of these people who think we work for them.

This makes me so angry. Every day in the local paper someone writes a letter to the editor saying that people who oppose the health plan are racist. Could it possibly be that we just don't want our tax money used for this? The government can't manage the programs it runs already, why would they think the gov't can handle this?

I'm torn on this crap. I truly do not know if these morons believe what they say or if they're simply trying to play on people's fears and emotions and create a hostile atmosphere at debating venues so more Obama supporters will bite off more of the oppositions' fingers. I wish I knew. Although, it's easy to believe that comments like these are just used to fuel the fires. Likening the debate about government-run healthcare to minorities being treated as second-class citizens is about as ridiculous a statement as I've ever heard. But I'm sure Charlie is far from the only person saying that. Obviously, not every person opposing Obama and his policies is a conservative or a "white southerner" or anything resembling his stereotypical racist, even if that's what they say and that's what myLot and blog diehard liberals think. There are a lot of apolitical people out there fed up not only with this jibberish, but Obama's secretive selections and overreaching in general. There are more and more realizing the BS every single day. It has to be a tactic. You don't have to know anything about politics to be able to call BS on this. All you have to be is old enough to remember Clinton as President. Hell, even Bush! He was opposed regularly, with yelling and signs and extremely hostile liberal crowds. Those people were considered to have legitimate beefs. I don't know anymore. The first person to call me a racist to my face is going to be punched in theirs. And that's a promise... assuming it's not a chick. Then I'll just have to spit. I'm SICK of it, personally. And when elections roll around, these jerks will find out that I'm not the only one. The biggest ongoing irony in this country is the liberal take on racism. A person's skin color only seems to matter to these progressive tools. They patronize minorities for years, making the waters part for any willing to play an elitist role (Rangel!), and strap the carrot on the rest while whipping them in the back to chase it and claiming it's the "man" inflicting the pain. Things are the worst in America where liberalism is in the highest concentrations. Funny. White southerners and their racism dropped off by well over 90% after blue government switched roles for power and left. Same oppression, different tactics. People need to wise the hell up.

If enough of your voting base will buy "thats racist!!!!" arguments, why not use them. I have heard a lot of comments like this and a lot of people think that McCain supporters were only suporting him because they were racist against Blacks. A lot of people who thik we should secure our boarders are considered anti-hispanic, etc etc. Anyone who thinks about these things realistically know that they are not true, but there are enough people who eat up stupidity that the comments are worthwile making from a political standpoint.
