Old house, bad plumbing

Back in April we moved and took the hosing made available to us through the military since we wanted to move ASAP. We knew the houses were old and smaller, but my hsubby checked them out before and and figured they'd due for awhile (we are only locked into a 6 months lease and it almost up). One of the problems we are finding is that the house has the worst plumbing ever invented (our neighbors have problems too). These houses were built in 1959 and other than had to be done cosmetic fixes, never been updated. We were told that the kitchen sink drains to the washing machine (which is in the kitchen) that line then drains to the bathrooms which then leaves the house. So the kitchen, dishwasher, washing machine, 2 toilets and the tub all go through 1 spot....
Earlier this week, we once again had a back up and had the guys out late at night snaking the drain. Whole running the washing machine, water came up through the sink and through the washing machine hose drain (thankfully we have an HE machine or the entire house would have flooded)
Maintenance says that liquid plumber and draino do not help. He suggested pouring hot water down the drain. I am not sure the extra hot water will help. The back up always happens in the kitchen, we run hot water and put boiling water down the drain and run a load of whites in hot water a week. My Mom suggested pouring bleach, but with animals and kids, I don't think that is such a good idea.
Any other idea? Would the baking soda/vinegar trick work?
Anyone have any other ideas that could prevent this from happening?

Wow. That would be more than a little rotten. A lot would depend on what is causing the back ups. I know that you put grease down the drain cold with cold water and not hot. If you use hot water t he grease is liquid but solidifies as it cools father down the pipe. Pouring hot water down a drain might help if hot water softens up the blockage. It might also do nothing at all.
Bleach probably wouldn't be helpful. At least, it would be less helpful than liquid plumber. Same with vinegar.
Hrm.. you say the backups happen in the kitchen? This means, when you have a blockage which is causing water to back up in the kitchen, you can still flush to toilet and it drains? If that is the case, then the problem area lies in the kitchen sink or in the washing machine. From your description, it sounds like the blockage happens after the washing machine.
( This would mean your problem isn't caused by roots growing into the exterior pluming. If that were the case, you couldn't flush the toilet while a backup is happening in the kitchen. This is good. )
For starters, perhaps you could be very careful not to use a garbage disposal in the kitchen. If nothing but water goes down the drain.. then it shouldn't cause blockages. The walls of the existing pipes might be caked and coated with this black nasty stuff that accumulates over time. The washing mashine's run off might be hot and forceful enough to break some loose which then floats down the pipe and creates a clog anew. Therefore, if you can get someone to replace the pipe between the washing machine and the toilets, I would expect a clean pipe to cause less problems. (Especially if no food goes down the kitchen sink.)

The house isn't ours, privatized housing owns it and they aren't interested in doing any major overhauls. In fact, these houses were even supposed to be here any more but to save $$ they decided to not tear them down and just make changes as needed.
When they snake the drains they don't get anything other than that black gunk you are talking about.
I guess we are just stuck with funky plumbing till we move - which will hopefully be soon!
