If you were short on food and had to borrow money from a friend so you could eat for the rest of the month, what would you buy. Figure that it is 8 days before you get paid again. Would you buy special cut deli meats directly from the deli, and Hormel pre-cooked roasts or would you buy food that will last for more than one meal? You only have $50 USD.

I buy like like only the essential... or food that is nutritious but not too expensive... $50 will not really take me and my daughter far... so i would have to stretch it as far as i could... but good thing is that this sort of thing has never happened to me yet... but if it does... then i we would be spending a lot of time at my parents' or in-laws' house where we can eat full meals for free...

Thank you! You make me feel so much better. I was riding home with my BF when I was thinking of this subject. I was with my friend when we did the shopping and she bought stuff that I could only dream of buying. I think that I have bought deli cut meat from the deli counter twice in my life! What she bought lasted her about three days and she needed MORE money and food. I didn't provide it for her as I was more than a bit upset. One of the things that I bought a ton of tonight was marked down luncheon meat. I got it for 25 cents a pack...and it is excellent meat and it wasn't out dated. When I pointed it out to my friend once when we were in the store together she stated that she didn't like it. She also stated that she hadn't tried it. I couldn't figure out if she hadn't tried it, how could she not like it? I spend about $60 a month for my food, it's only me and I usually have food left over at the end of the month. Shoot, when I was putting food in the freezer tonight I discovered that I had two whole chickens in there. That was a wonderful find!!!

I rarely buy meat nowadays... my daughter and i prefer chicken and fish... and these two items cost less... but i do spend a lot on drinks like juice, milk, and soda... my 3 year old and i will not survive without these items...

I drink a lot of water and tea. I can't drink sodas because of digestive problems and I will drink milk on occasion, but not too often. My big splurge is for a Mango smoothie...and of course when they are in season I eat mangoes like they won't ever grow again! I would love to have mango trees, but where I live the climate isn't right.

First is whole wheat bread. That provides the fiber I need. Second, peanut butter. It has protein and also fiber. Since I have $50 I'll buy preserves since I like it with peanut butter. Then various vegetables and fruits. No, not the canned stuff. I will never do canned vegetables, ever, except for beans (pinto, black, kidney, etc.; not green beans.) With $50 I think I can go for over two, maybe even three weeks.

My grocery bill tonight was filled with fruit and veggies. I will eat veggies til I turn green before I eat too much meat. Every so often I crave chili, but I make it with ground turkey rather than beef. I'm not too big on beans except for green beans, whether string or just cut. I guess that's why my food bill stays at around $60 a month for myself. Shoot my animals (dogs and cats) eat better than I do. Oh, I will go down to the lake that I live close to and do some cat fishing (no, not for the kind of cats that purr! )but my beef intake is next to nothing...beef costs too much.
