Are you a good listener when it comes to playing by ear?

I have just started learning to play the piano and I absolutely love it! I bought this huge electronic keyboard and I know that they have been around for a very long time now but I cannot believe that I did not pick one up before now! Anyway, I love classical music and have started listening to my favourite pieces and subsequently playing by ear! Have you ever done this? Do you play the piano yourself? I have never taken lessons and I never will, I love the idea of teaching myself. I heard that some people can actually play the piano very well and have never learnt how to read sheet music. So, what do you think? Do you have a musical ear? This can relate to any instrument you play. Andrew

Well i used to be one that could listen to music but lately i find that is very frustating at times .

Yes, this is definitely a task at times. I guess I'm still going through the phase of being extremely enthusiastic! I hope that this never leaves me as I would love to learn the piano and also hopefully read sheet music. I tend to pull out the keyboard once per day and then practise for about half hour or so. I love mainly classical music so that is what I'm trying to learn at this stage. Andrew

I remember when i was in highschool, my dad or my brother i think bought me a small size electronic key-board but unfortunately i wasn't able to use it because none of my family taught me because they too weren't into music.@AndrewFreyne (6281)

That's really nice that your dad and brother bought you an electronic keyboard. I've got no one to teach me really so I'm relying on my own efforts and I really hope that this will suffice! I do practise everyday when I get the chance so I'm sure that this will help me to make good progress in time. It's just a nice hobby to get involved with I think. I love to hear piano music. I think piano is the best musical instrument in this world. Although i can't play a piano, but i always pay attention whenever i see someone playing on a piano. Piano has a soft and easy to listen melody. No one will really can dislike a piano music. I've planning to learning piano but so far i have no time for do it. But i hope i can start to learning piano as soon as possible. About musical ear, i think i have it but not so great. I'm a newbie and still learning everything about music so far. Hi dianmelydia, yes I love the sound of piano music too especially jazz music that is played on the piano during the evenings! It will be great for you to start learning the piano when you get the time. When I'm playing now or trying to play I experience a form of escapism that I cannot describe. I think that over time, the more that you practise the better you will become. Good luck in relation to your plans with this. Andrew
