What is a writer?

pen and paper - it's a piece of paper with an old quill ink pen writing on it.

People everyday call themselves writers, and sometimes their dream is shot down by ignorant rude people. I admit that not everybody is a good writer... but what I will tell you is what a writer truly is. A writer is anyone that can take emotions and turn them into words. Someone who can take simple words and weave the most intricate of webs to draw the reader in. To put the reader into the story. In everything I write I try to do this. No I'm not a great writer-not in my opinion- but I have faith in myself! And with self-worth you can do a lot. what do you think a writer is?

I am a very little writer here in Italy. I have just started this sort of activity, but it is always secondary for me. In fact I have to go to the university and study every day. so in my opinion writing is somewhat similar to evade from your daily routine. Moreover a writer is someone who is not superficial, someone who loves the smallest things.

I love how you put that phrase into words wmaths, concering writers loving the smallest things. Even so writers must always work to get better and to challenge themselves. It is good that youa re going to the university. Happy mylot!

I thought I was a writer until my father in law told me it was the stupidest thing I've ever did. I like to write but I'm not good at it. i had a teacher tell me I wasn't any good at it too. I have written stuff since then just poetry and stuff nothing fancy. I think a writer is someone who has an imagination and can tell a story about anything and leave you wanting more.

I don't think I could ever stop writing even if somebody told me I was the worst writer in the world. It's become such a huge part of me. I've found it easier to write things than to say. I hope you have a Blessed life and see that "failure" is only a failure if you give up on what you love. :D God Bless.

I think a writer is anyone who is driven to write. If you wake up in the morning and all you can think about is what to write, you are a writer. If, while you are supposed to be doing something else like working or taking care of your kids, you are busy working out the details of a story in your head, you are a writer. The true question is what is the difference between writer and author, and why do some writers drag their heels at the idea of becoming an "author?" To me, the difference between the two is the difference between passion and career. A writer will write for everyone and no one at the same time while and author writes for an audience (editor/publisher first followed by book buyers then finally, the public) in order to get paid. An author writes what is needed to sell, to further their career, a writer writes what is in their heart, to get it out into the world.

There is a writer in everyone. There is not one person alive that can't write. My 6-year old even tries to type in his own little computer journal. Writing is an expression of feeling and there is no one on earth that is devoid of these feelings.

Hello Eternal_ink, What I think a writer is would be someone that is able to capture the essence of a person, situation, thing or idea and turn it into words. Just as a painter is able to capture each and every single detail of a sunrise or a sunset. A writer does the same thing, only they do it with words. Also a writer is very passionate about his or her writing. Just like you are. PS: Please add me as a friend because I feel equally as passionate. Note that our writing don't have to be the best. But the most important factor is that we are getting it out there. Happy mylot!

You words suggest the faith you have in yourself is justified. For me, everyone is a writer, if you know to take the thought in your head and mould them into something everyone can understand and appreciate, you are a writer. Every child who imagines a little story in his head while he plays, if only he writes it down, he is a writer. Every single heartbroken girl who writes soppy poems dedicated to the guy of their dreams, they are writers. Poets, philosophers, thinkers, analysts .. as long as they are putting their their thoughts out in the form of words, every one is a writer. Some write for commercial purposes, some write to impress fellow friends, some write for themselves and some write for others. We can never know what all things a person wrote in his/her life and what was the purpose behind penning their thoughts down when they sat down to do it. So I do believe we have a writer, a poet in all of us. Good luck to you with your writing, as long as you believe in yourself and keep getting better, you will no doubt reach the level you want to reach with your writing. G'day.

I think everyone who wants to write can be a writer. Perhaps not everyone has a gift for saying exactly what they want but as long as they are writing, they are a writer. I believe it is the same with art, if you draw, then you are an artist. Just because your books do not get published or your paintings get sold does not mean you are not a writer or artist. I agree with you, if you have faith in yourself, then you are a writer.

You make a good point in that. Everyone can write yes, but not everyone has the gift to put the words into a form that grabs the reader and basically throws them into the words and emotions of the story. Thanks for the response and God Bless. :D

a writer is someone who has a lot to say and share with the world to express and educate the world of certain happenings. but a writer is also entertaining and informative in the way that he/she expresses his/her words. a good writer is like an artist, creating a work of art through creative writing, and this written creative writing leaves an impression on others, whether good or bad, because it is the writer's honest opinion of a topic, regardless if others agree with it or not.

It is too far away to me. What is attractive to me is the story, not the writer. No good story, no writer, he or she will be neglected by the readers, even though they take a lot of emotions to write.

I think children are correct, when they do something they call themselves that ex if they color they are artist if they write they are writers. Maybe we should all take a lesson from them. We are what we do,and that can change often.

In my own opinion, as what you have said, a writer are those people who can take emotions and put those emotions into words. These people can also bring you to a world where they believe is true and puts you in the story that they have written. Great writers often write pleasurable and worthy articles. They gave information, Joy, and Leisure to the readers. Not all books are boring to read. I believe that each book a writer has his or her plan on writing about it and they have some meaning embedded in their story which they want the readers to learn while reading.

A writer is a person who write stories or a fiction.A good writer is the one who writes for the sake of knowledge and education. His intention is to educate people not to take advantage on people. Many writers write for the sake of making money only so they always put a high price on their writtings. They don't care for the less unfortunate people they only think about money. This is a bad writer evethough they writes on educational topics but they put a high value on it thus make it available to a selected few.

Hi eternal_ink, In my opinion, a great writer is someone who can become one with the characters in his story, he should feel that he is living the part. I agree with you about turning emotions into words and believing in yourself is a must. Blessings.

For me, I believe that everyone that aspires and makes a dedicated effort to being a writer is a writer. Whether you are able to only sit and write about your life or whether your imagination runs wild and your write about things that you dream up, then you are a writer. There are so many different types of writers that it is difficult, if not impossible to put them in a box and generalize the term writer. There are fiction writers who are very different from non-fiction writers and the poets are different from these too. So, if you aspire and try to be a writer then you are a writer.
