I want to learn to develop blackberry applications, I have been reading this online textbook at http://math.hws.edu/javanotes and tried an intro to java course at http://www.javapassion.com/ but it didn't really explain it well and I can't pay anything for the courses. Can anyone help with the path I need to take to develop blackberry apps?

please always clear.. what you want to learn and which type of blackberry application you need to explore.. there are lots and lot of applications types are available.
Jor blacberry java applications: the blackberry site itself providing the eclipse for balckberry development and java sdk .. and the y also provide the tutorials and hand notes in the pdf format from newbie to novice. you go there and download it. and learn it... hapy coding... happy mylotting.
