Are dinosaurs real or did they ever existed as we have known them to be?

I had a student who had been collecting items and information on dinosaurs as they are his favorites since he started to read up to now however when I was in my college days, I had a creationist professors who said that they had never existed as he based his studies on the accounts of the Bible and the findings of science. Of course they are fiction books and even movies on dinosaurs, implicating they are for real. How do you answer, are they real or ever existed?
