Interpretation of song lyrics

Music appreciation? Do you look at song lyrics and try and find deeper meaning in them? Well with this crowd, it's impossible. I've mentioned before that the kids love the Herman's Hermits CD. They have their favorite songs and they have their not so favorite songs. Dearra isn't very fond of "No Milk Today", but she really hates "The End of the World". I guess she isn't really into "boo hoo my relationship is over" type of songs. Anyway we were in the car today and "No Milk Today" came on. Dearra protested, so I did "evil mom" and moved it straight over to "The End of The World". That's when Richard and the twins started protesting "I liked that song" and "I want this song". So I pulled rank. I moved it over to my favorite song, "Wonderful World". We're listening and Dearra asks, "what does it mean, don't know much about science books". That's when Richard busted in and said, "it means I'm dumb but I love you." hahahahahaha Have you had a good laugh today?

I do not listen to much modern music, but I have one question: "How can you know what they are singing?" I can never hear the words. For one thing, they are not distinct, and even more than that, it seems the one aim of the "musicians" is to drown out the vocals. I admit I am old and old-fashioned when it comes to music. That is obvious since I listen to Nat King Cole, Perry Como and others of that ilk, but when listening to these, every word sung is distinct. The "trilly" parts of the instruments are only between the sentiments of the singer. I do listen to and appreciate modern songs. Like another respondent, I listen to Gospel songs and I love many of the newer ones. Those written by Stuart Townend are fantastic, but the instruments do not drown out the vocals. Thanks for yet another instance of the fun shared in your family. I still want to be adopted.

Not only how can you know what they're singing, but why do they feel obligated to turn every song into an exercise to show their entire vocal range. Why not just sing the melody? Yep, I love songs from that era too... Adoption papers are in the mail. :-)

Once in a while I'll go look up lyrics and find that I've gotten something totally wrong!

Usually, I have to listen to a song a few times before I can hear and understand all of the lyrics. Sometimes, I even have to consult the internet to help me out. I have found that the older songs are sometimes harder to hear the lyrics than the songs of the 70 and 80's. I guess that is because technology improved in the recording area. I love the music of the 60's, 70's and 80's

"A kind of hush", just fell over me! Just getting the kids to LISTEN to Herman's Hermits, is amazing in itself. Congratulations. "The bottle stands for love...a symbol of the dove." is the line...."peace"! I'll bet you go crazy in the car when they sing "Henry The VIII"? But I really like the science book interpretation the best. Cheers; cdrxo

They love the Beatles. And I'll have to dig up the PP&M CD, not sure where it's gotten to...

Hmmm...So I guess The Moody Blues are out, then?....And S & G might be a trifle too "deep" for them. Perhaps some "Yellow Submarine" or "Puff The Magic Dragon", would be better choices? Those are great sing-a-long songs.

So right he was! You don't have to be top of the class to know how to love! I have had several laughs today and most of them were on here. I saw several friends with new avatars - and all of them yellow expressions and one in particular was so significant. Did you see Mr. Krupesh yet today? I have been smiling on almost every discussion I open because there was an air of happiness and laughter that is what here should be about

sometimes i enjoy the music than the lyrics though the song has good lyrics or message in it. but i guess no matter how good the message of the song if the music is not great we would not want to sing it.

I never used to care about song lyrics until recently. I started listening to music of the singer-songwriters such as Dylan, Simon, Lennon. These guys took the emphasis away from the music and used the lyrics as the focal point and the singing as the most important instrument. Now I listen to the lyrics and develop a greater appreciation for the song and find it that much more enjoyable.

I can never decipher what metal song lyrics are about just by the first hearing, LoL.. normally, not the really gory ones though, I could fathom what's being said. There are loads of meanings that are totally lost on me, but once I checked out the lyrics on the net, there are just so much metaphorical meanings that you have to decode it, something like that. But metal beats are awesome though..

I like to find deeper meaning in songs, but with lyrics like "Don't know much about science books" there's hardly any room to NOT be goofy, lol! I like to find goofy meanings or silly meanings for songs as well, especially if they're a little TOO Serious.

True, nothing too deep there, just a silly love song. Not that there's anything wrong with silly love songs. :-)

There are songs that I understand the words of but I don’t get their meaning. Maybe I’m ignorant but although I love Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah I don’t really get it. It is amusing how two people can listen tot the same lyrics and yet interpret them completely differently.

hi dawnald, when i am with my kids i am conscious with the songs that i will play and sing. since both of my sons are with autism, i see to it that the song that i will play is soothing and will really calm them down. since i am fond of love songs and other mellow music...sometimes slow rock is fine, my sons love to listen to my type of music and then later hear them hum the tune and even sing it. they too have appreciation to jazz and modern music that i myself don't know. it's fun because i am learning from their music as they are with me. IN TERMS OF FINDING MEANING TO IT... OF COURSE I DO. I EXERTED EFFORT TO EXPLAIN THE MESSAGE TO MY KIDS AND WITH THE LOVE SONGS... WELL, I ENJOYED THE FEELING OF RELATING MY SENTIMENTAL MOMENTS WITH MY HUSBAND. WE DO HAVE OUR FAVE AND THEME SONGS.
