Do you save water in public places?

When I go to the washroom, sometimes I'd hear water flowing from the faucet or urinal, and I'd just turn it off. However, there are people who wouldn't do it. Someone once told me, "Why bother? They're paying for it." - I'd feel guilty for wasting water. Obviously some people don't, as it's not their home. What's your comment on this? Shouldn't we be responsible enough to turn off the tap or switch off the lights even though we're not at home?

Dear Kev, I will definitely turn off the tap if I see one. Whether it is public area or someone's house. Why waste? Water is very precious, it gives life! Ways to save water 1) I filled up a 500ml plastic bottle with water. I put it in my toilet flusher tank so that the water that flow in from the inlet pipe is cut down by the weight/volume of the water in the bottle. Some houses, their toilet flusher has option of half flush and full flush. To those who don't have, this is a good idea to save water. Sometimes we do not need so much water (full flush) to flush the toilet, right? 2) I hand wash my clothes so that I can recycled the water. 1st rinse I would use to was the drain. 2nd rinse I would wash my car. 3rd rinse (water) I would use to soak another batch of clothes or wash my son school shoes. This means! reuse the water, save the environment, good exercise and save money too. It is a Win-Win situation. 3) Use watering can when you water the plant, this is better than just pouring directly. Watering can used less water - the amount is just enough for the plant. No wastage! In Israel, water is very expensive (deserted land), they came out a special watering system that provide "just enough" water for their plantation/orchard plants. 4) My mum will put a pail outside on rainy day to collect the rain water. She will used it to water her garden. 5) The water that she used to rinse the rice for cooking, she will keep in a basin for soaking used oily plates, bowls after dinner. Good idea? I really hope everyone will do their part, collectively the effect can be felt!

Hi Iriene, cool ways to save water. I've done #5. It's good practise to save as much water as you can, and hope this good habit would be passed on to the youngsters so that they too learn to save. Cheers!

Great job, Kev...Keep it up! A little Drop of Water, Make A great Sea... Even Selangor State Government are subsidising our water by RM11.00 +-, I did not waste it. We should save water, to support the Government... that their move to subsidize did not go in vain! Thanks and all the best!

Hi, I am from Chennai, India. Some years ago, we had a severe water shortage, and water was supplied to us once in two days in a water tanker. Every house hold was given about 10 to 20 pots of water for their complete use. When the water tanker used to come to our street, there used to be a mad scramble to get into the line, with the woman and children running after the water tanker. After this, I always make it a point to not only to prevent the water from going to waste, but I also save the water through rain water harvesting.

Yes, it's a good lesson learnt, indeed. However, some people just don't learn as they think water is unlimited, or they simply don't care. Good for you.

I do since I feel responsible to conserve energy and water. They said too, "Why bother? They're paying." But I think the price of conserving is priceless. We help to save our Mother Earth. There's nothing wrong in doing that. It's like during Earth Hour campaign. I think our house is the only house that switch off in this area. They said too at that time, "Why bother? What different will it make?" Well at least I am trying.

I feel bad when people waste water from public washrooms. After washing people leave the water taps open causing lots of water to waste.May be they forget to close it because they are in a hurry or they don't care public property which is for the masses. I always try to save water in public places.I just don't want to leave open the taps after a wash. But I have failed to do it some 2 to 3 times because I was in a hurry and forgot to close the water taps. Everywhere in the world now providing a continuous supply of water in big cities has become a big challenge. As the water table is going deep water availability is decreasing in plane areas also.Water is life as it is necessary for doing most of human activities. It is keeping the living beings alive on this earth.

yes, i turn off water from any public place. when we talk of "waste", it is a loss of something, regardless of its location and in what manner. be it in our homes, park, restaurants or wherever, it is still "waste". i feel guilty with water dripping from the faucet. isn't water a natural resource? let us then conserve it lest we run out of this very important natural resource.

I do because even if it's a public place, water is important to us all. Some people are inconsiderate and don't really care. That's unfortunate. If all of us did our part, we could save a lot of water. I think we should be responsible because it's a natural resource that we all need.

you should be proud of your behavior.through the resource on the earth seems like inexhaustible, but that is not the truth.it is quite limited. At the same time, the number of humanbeings are quite huge.if each one wast a piece of paper,i think the paper maybe cover the surface of the earth.i live in China,a few decades ago,we all believe that the resource in China were endless, but recently we notice that's a big lie,we deceived ourselves as well as others. So no matter how much we saving the water that won't be overstated.

Yes, I do. I really don't understand why people doesn't bother about it. Once I visited one of the amusement park recently. I saw live..that a lady just opened the tap and leave it like that. she didn't find it to close and at that time I reached there. I asked her to close the tap and she immediately said no tome and rushed somewhere. i was shocked and very much surprised hearing No from her. Then I closed the tap and told all this to my husband. And my husband said that there are many people like her who do these type of thing..they doesn't have the civic sense and responsibility.

As a responsible human being it is our duty to turn off the tap or complain a leaking tap or switch of the lights and fans. These natural resources are fading day by day and due to our negligence we will run out of water and electricity. I make it a point to turn off the tap whether in public or in home when the water is going waste. There are many places where people do not tend to repair even a leaking tap.

Hello Kevchua, For me, I am quite concern on the water usage and electric usage at home. It is not cheap when we come to paying all these bills. So we have practice to save water and electric too. When I am outside, be it in the public toilet or restaurant, I will just do the same like what I do at home. !

I believe savings water starts from home.. and frankly speaking, those who really don't save water, just don't know how it would suffer if there is no water or during water rationing!! I have come across a bad water rationing during 1998, and I am till now (even before that) understands how important is to ensure there is sufficient water to survive! Those days while we water ration just because of the Commonwealth Games is no JOKE! From now on, if I hear any water rationing going to happen in my area, I freak out! So, yes, I do help to switch off the taps if it's running, and I even make complains to those management on those leak taps too! I just can't take it seeing water dripping every where!

I will turn off the faucet. As we all know, the water is very important to us ,and also valuable , we must save it. But saving is not just at home, public place is also very important. So let's act together to protect the earth's water resources.

I would certainly turn off a tap if it was just running. The attitude that its not our home is selfish on many levels - because someone works maintaining that bathroom and may have to deal with a floor or something - how would you feel if you worked there? They are paying for the waste. And also on a bigger scale, it might not be your home but its your planet! We are ALL responsible forthe environment. Its also kind of sad when there are countries where people do not have water to drink that is clean, and their children are getting sick because they are drinking contaminated water- but we take it so much for granted. I have recently been involved with raising money for a project to bring a well into a village like this, and to see these people when they have a well, watching their children drinking safe water and splashing about in it, and not having to spend hours of the day carrying water jars for long distances - like they have been given a miracle. I will never take for granted again the fact that we can just turn on a tap.

Hi Kechua... excellent, that u picked up such a nice topic to discuss. i always make sure to save water wenever i get a chance.. it is one of the natural resources which will not be available to us any more if we don bother saving it. i also ensure that i turn off lights, TV, Computers, etc at my work place as many of them dont.. i mean come on man, how hard is it to understand that one day it will all disappear from the planet if we dont save it? wat's the pt of getting educated if we don feel the moral responsibility towards such things?..

I pay attention to water saving very much and I will turn off the water whenever I see this situation. Once I saw my friend keep the water flowing to cool a watermelon, I feel angry but he just tell me that

Yes, you are correct. We are responsible for all the energy wasted. We are also responsible for the precious water that is lost. Humans are just the most insensible creatures this world has. All the other creatures had made sure this world will not be abused. But man deemed it otherwise. And look what kind of world we have. The islands are sinking. The mainlands are being flooded, too. We could reason "Hey, I paid for that" but it does not give one the right to waste it.

Well,I have seen many cases as wasting water in public places, and of course I will turn it off if I can,Not becuase I should be responsible for something or I want save water for others, but just because you know I have the habit,I just feel not good to see this happening, just like I will turn off all the lights when I am leaving my house,it is just that simple.

Well I think it's important to save water, not only for the sake of money, but for the environment. We should be responsible to save utilities because everything in this world is LIMITED and we need to save what we can. Save water, save lives. There are millions of people around the world who die of thirst and hunger every day. We must at least be thankful for what we have, and even if it's not ours, to take responsibility for utilities in public places. We do not own anything, everything we have comes from nature. So it is only our human duty to give back to nature and to save the earth.
