Any ideas for homemade cat litter?

I have eight indoor cats and was wondering if any one had a recipe for a homemade cat litter that would not cost me a lot to make and was easy. I go through lots of litter a week and would like to cut back but the cats would not like that. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I would like something that is non toxic and will keep the odor down.

When I had a cat indoors I would use sand mixed with baking soda.
I was going to try this recipe but then i my cat passed on and i never did replace hm.

I wonder if you mixed the cheap stuff with baking soda or flour? I am not sure. It would have to be something that can soak up smells and liquid.
