E-mail. Do you check your SPAM folder?

I am sure all of us have at least ONE valid email address. What I do is check my in-box day in day out. I've never looked through my SPAM folder. I've always thought that SPAM folder is for spam mails. Then as I was chatting with a fellow myLotter last nite, he told me that he had email me something earlier. I did not receive it. He then told me to go check my SPAM folder. The mail might be wrongly sent there. Guess what? The mail was indeed in the SPAM folder. And you know what? Many more myLot's notification were in there too. lol. I guess the SPAM folder is not too smart eh? So from now on, occasionally, I'll have a look in my SPAM folder for anything that might be worth reading... Maybe I should check it as regularly as I check my IN box? Do you check your SPAM folder?

The SPAM folder is only so "smart" as the system is designed to be along with the input that you give to it. myLot emails are bound to go there and with good reason, because it's some site no one knows or cares about that's seemingly dispatching emails by the dozen to not only you but other people, thus, SPAM. What's not so much within good reason are personal emails that get ditched in there too. Personally, I use a Gmail account and an older ISP account I had for a long, long time. Gmail typically filters things correctly... the automatic SPAM marking is usually only for emails that have very clear traces of being SPAM material, while anything slightly in doubt goes to the incoming folder. With my other ISP it's not so much like so and instead a decent number of emails hit the SPAM folder, whereas some SPAM is sticking in my inbox. The solution would be in configuring it, but they have the clumsiest of interfaces... So, yes, on that case I am forced to check the SPAM folder daily or whenever I sign up for something and I have no idea where that email will really end up.

You know what cmdr001, I must be the silliest person on Earth. I have a gmail but did not utilise it. It is standing idle there for nothing. I use yahoo instead. Just because it has been with me for a very very long time. I think there will be a time in our life we need to change rite? One day I'll switch to gmail.. lol..

Hi there, my email has a junk folder but yes not all mail that goes there is junk. I have had friends emails got there too. I will always mark their mail as safe after that so it will go to my inbox. I check it daily whenever I see when there is mail in there. And the stuff that is spam I always report it as a phishing scam. That way it keeps my mail safe.

To answer your question, YES, i do check my spam folder every few days... cos i have experienced deleting what my friend has sent to me. Same like your case, when he resent, i saw it in the spam box... so since that day, i always look through the spam mails, just in case, something important is there.

Hello submerryn. I guess this is one of your biggest comeback topics! I have been checking my spam folder since the first time i had an email. Because some of the messages are sent in spam folder and it might be an important message so i do check it together with my inbox.

hello koalapenguin, I've not been starting good topics lately as 1) too many things been going on in my life right now. 2) recent topics are ABOUT things that's been going on in my life currently (and I believe it doesn't give a darn to most people, hence the lack of response! lol) anyway, back to this topic, I've had email for a very very very long time. But I am not so savvy in IT you see. I do things straight forward. One way street. I dont bother to study what else is better. That's the reason for my lack of knowledge about it, until I was told by that friend last nite.

Last time I will just press 'Delete' the whole Spam folder. But my wife told me to scan thru' the titles and source before delete them. According to her, at times important mail might end up on the Spam Folder because the sender was not under your address book or are new to your email account. Moreover those important noticification which was sent out in 'bulk' addresses also ended up in Bulk Folder. So, it is advisable to scan trhough it...lol

James, Your wife is one wise lady there. I've deleted my SPAM folder without checking it for years and years now. Only on the 090909 did I learnt that SPAM folder does not contain 100% spam mails! Some important mail might just end up there too! :)

submerryn, You are absolutely right. My wife is a wise lady. She is an amazingly likeable beautiful smart lady. I love her. There was once my customer called on my hand phone to complain why I didn't response her mail. How to reply if I have not receive? My resourceful wife said, " Honey, why don't you check on the SPAM mail?" " Princess, you are right. It is found in the SPAM folder." From that day onwards, I don't empty my SPAM mails without checking.

Before I closed my last email account I had to check my spam folder once a day because I had about 50 or more spam messages but some of them were actual messages to me that ended up showing up in the wrong folder. However, I got too tired of all the junk mail and decided to finally close that email and use another one. Now I only have to check my spam folder once a week or less. I don't get that much mail in there that is that interesting, it's pretty much all the random spam that we don't want anything to do with so I could care less about it.

Are you using a yahoo or msn email account? Most of the time, those email providers does not have very good spam filters. Even if you mark it is not spam. But I suggest that you try to mark the emails that are not supposed to be spam as "not spam." if the emails still goes to your spam folder after doing so, then there is a problem with the email filtering of your email provider. To answer your question, yes I do check it once in a while, but since I'm using a gmail account I rarely see legitimate emails in the spam folder. It happens only if I accidentally mark one of my emails as SPAM hehehe...

hi yuna, I am using yahoo, hence the not so efficient spam filtering system. I've noticed a lot of respondents stated that gmail is very effective in filtering spams. I think it is high time I change my email to gmail instead. I do have gmail, just that, the yahoo is more active. :(

I've noticed too that mylot's been going into spam. I don't know if it's every email client or not. Mine is through yahoo... and I keep getting mylot emails in my spam. SO NOW I check it ALL THE TIME. LOL! Least now ya know, right? I'm sure a lot of others have had this problem, so they may have chalked it up to that.

I've got a gmail account but don't use it for mylot. I've heard it's good for that purpose too though. As for the address book thing, not a bad idea but I look through spam anyway now, so it doesn't matter. Almost like a good routine, lol.

add mylot to your safelist/white list. simply add mylot email address to your address book and the filter will put mylot emails into your inbox. most of them will come through but of course once in a while some might stray into the spam folder

I think that it's important to check your spam folder as you can sometimes receive emails that are clearly not spam. I check my email everyday and I tend to get countless emails in my spam box. I generally delete all of them but occasionally there is the odd one or two that I place into my inbox. It's very easy to delete them if you have too many but I think that it's important that the spam folder is checked regulary. Andrew

Andrew, Yes, now that I'm aware of it, I checked it regularly and it seems not much of a hassle. Checking inbox and spam folder, not much difference. So, just check both of them and I now never missed anything important!

Dear submerryn, Must check because I remembered one of my contest winning notification went into Junk Mail Folder. Thank God I did not delete it. So it is better to glance through it without opening individual mail by reading the titles and from where! At times it went to Spam Mail due to the sender send a standard mail to many bulk addresses. So, our 'canggih' - intelligent mail scanner sort it into Spam Mail and sent it to JUNK Mail Folder! Cheers :)

Most people check their spam folder and I'm proud to be one of them lol. I guess all has been said here that there are important messages sent to spam folder. I thought before that messages sent there are all spam. I used to delete all messages without reading but just like you, i happened to see an important message from a job opportunity. I lost the job because i had read the email a week late for the interview. It was a lesson for me so i check my spam folder everyday just like my inbox. Cheers!

Yes it was. Sometimes you have to experience something (good or bad) before you learn or understand things. Well, i guess that is where the "we learn from our mistakes comes in" . Now it is a habit to check spam time and time again

Hi submerryn! I check my e-mail as frequently and as regularly as possible. I do not only check my inbox. I also check my SPAM folder. There are instances when some mails actually get into the SPAM. I have experienced that several times already. That is why, I also check the SPAM even if most of the contents are not really important.

Yes, I check my spam folder regularly because I find there part of my paid emails.I joined a site month ago,and I didn't received any email for two weeks or so, so I just checked my spam folder and find those emails there. But the paid links were expired. My spam filter works perfect, but sometimes it makes little mistakes and I have to check manually if all emails in this folder are spam.

Oh silvercoin, That is such a waste, your pain links expired just because they ended up in your spam folder. Glad that you are checking it now. :)

I check my mail once every two or three days. I hardly check SPAM mails. If I check them I empty all SPAMS. Once in a while we need to check SPAM Mails because small mails my wrongly send to SPAMS. It happened to me before when a innocent good mail was wrong sent to SPAMS.

Spam filters in any mails are never fool-proof. Some spams will escape undetected and get into the Inbox while other mails that are useful get stuck in the spam folder, and never get read. So yes, check our spam inbox regularly. To avoid unknowingly sending a genuine message into your friend's spam folder, it is important to write the subject / heading / title of your mail correctly. Having subject headings like "Hi, it's me" or "Money sent" will most likely be sent to the spam folder as the filter treats certain words as being potential spams.

Kev, That's interesting. I never knew the subject headings can pose as potential spams. I have one annoying habit when I do send email out to friends, I always forget to include the subject header. The email will be usually sent out blank without a subject. Why? Because very rarely do I send email to my friends. I normally chat with them through messenger. And my 'line of duty' doesnt require me to email out to frequent too.

Yes I do! It's for the very same reason you just said..A lot of my friends ave emails for me which go directly to my spam folder and i dont know why. most, if not all, of the verification emails i receive from sites i join also end up on that folder so i made it a habit to check my spam folder every once in a while just to make sure im not missing any emails and to delete real spam emails so they dont pile up. :D

calai618, I dont delete my spam mails previously. They auto delete it in a month. Only recently when I started to check both my inbox and spam mails do I manually delete them. :)
