very small terrorists?

the terrorism act in the uk gave the police power to stop and search people without suspicion. it looks like the police may be misusing this to some degree and they are certainly getting a lot of complaints. this is the second time in the last couple of months that complaints have been made because they searched small children: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/8248282.stm and this is some more general background http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8105093.stm the thing is doing this is unlikely to prevent a determined terrorist attack and it is throroughly annoying people, not to mention being an invasion of privacy. now do you think the police are going too far here and what is the situation in your country - have anti-terror laws become ridiculous?

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized. ~ U.S. Constitution, Amendment 4. We have this protection in place against this type of thing, though it does seem to be ignored sometimes here, especialy where federal issues are comcerned, but we have Bush's patriot act (voted for by Obama as well) to thank for that. We also have seen another disturbing trend in violating this...in the form of our border patrol. They have taken up the practice of setting up random checkpoints on highways in states that border Mexico or Canada and in a lot of other cases, states on the coast where no such border exists, they consider them, "ports of entery". I'm not talking about the standard check points you encounter at the border when you cross in to our country, no, these check points are sometimes as much as 75 miles from any border. But what you are describing is even more obsurd and "Orwellian". I have been mainly focused on these things in my own country but it has not escaped my notice thatthe U.K. seems to be reverting to a police state as well, in many ways more blatently and faster than we are. You guys ned to really start rising against this type of thing while you still have the ability to do so. Once liberty is gone, it is rarely returned.

I realize how my response came across, and I apologize, I wan't trying to pull a "yours is worse than mine" type of thing. I am in full agreament, these things are unnessesary, invasive, ineffective and though we may not like the word, do give the feel of a "police state". It was the first word I thought of when I was stopped at one of those checkpoints I mentioned....along with "paperz pleaze!"

i was wondering when i'd get the police state comment. i think the main argument against this is that the complaints are being taken seriously and it's looking very likely that some of this will stop. anyway i don't really want to get into a 'your country is more of a police state than mine' type thing. my point was that these a lot of the supposedly anti-terror measures seem to be both pointless and invasive. your country too.

i wasn't being very serious with that remark. it seems to be that a lot of the anti-terrorism moves are the usual semi (if not in)competent gumph we have come to expect from politicians.

Yes, the way some racists in congress want to do in fighting terrorism in USA is to allow police do 'shi*' like you described in UK, they claimed racial profiling is a great way in stopping terrorism, so they single out minority group like muslims, middle eastern people, non white Americans for harassment , unfortunately many white Americans believe it will work. It is crazy n hateful.!!!!

oh, that's a nice one. we've actually had problems because of efforts to avoid this in the uk - the police have been very careful to ensure they have a racial balance in their stop and searches. all very good but being the police of course this means they haven't done it very well.

hi jb, Police and politician in any country and any kind of set up be it democratic or dictoatorship would want as much control and power on the common public as they can. This is so more now in western countries where citizens had lot of freedom and rights. I think police there is as incompitent as elsewhere so they start accumulating powers and then misuse it. Ofcourse most of laws aew rediculous and mostly used by police and politicians to settle their own scores. But this is going too far ahead if police is checking children in name of terrorism ..the children who dont even know what terrorism is.

i think part of this is that the police also don't know exactly what they are meant to be doing.

I think we should not suspect our police work. I know most of childre are not terrorist but you don't know what will happen with some children. They might be used by other adult or terrorits to take terrorism weapon and hurt people. I also want to say becuase the TV and internet develop today's children know a lot more than before. The tradionational definition abut childre should be adjusted. Don't get me wrong I don't mean children are terrorists but some children do have the ability to be a potential terrorist. I think the UK school should tell children more how to avoid being used by terrorists so maybe police would have less excuses to check children. happy mylotting.

well this is true. i think the issue here is all the stop and searches when there is no cause for suspicion whatsoever.
