What is your opinion on recreational fishing?

I've been fishing for a lot of years now and I love to eat my catch fresh on the day! I'm curious however what people's attitudes are in general towards fishing? Do you think it's cruel, unneccesarry or do you think it's ok as long as you actually eat what you catch. I'd like to know your opinions on teh recreational side of things and not the commercial side as that is a whole different debate!
