Did you hear about this in the news? http://www.lawyersandsettlements.com/settlements/13814/katrina-flood-victims-agree-20-million-settlement.html
Now I'm not sure who the levee boards are but the settlement if equally distributed would work out to be $40.00 per person. I'm sure the damages to property and life were in the billions.
On top of that we don't know what legal fee's will also be deducted...
I'm sure this is only one lawsuit in a group of many...
It might be a little justice, in the grand scheme of things certainly it is only one little part of a greater problem.

Because it was a suit against the levee boards which I am not certain of how they were funded or insured I can't say too much about the settlement based on probable assets from which to draw down from.
I think this is just one of many lawsuits but by the settlement these people were very culpable for allowing a dangerous known condition to cause severe damage...

I don't understand this lawsuit. Were not the majority of people in those districts of NO renters, or on government subsidies? Were not they (that suffered from the levee breaks) the poorest of the NO residents? Were not they the ones who were displaced? Sure the damage to the buildings and homes were extensive, but did the owners of the property not have insurance to cover their losses? I think there must be more to this story.

Every one in N.O. has lost a lot, I hope there is a better settlement from other more capable sources.

What justice? Crooked lawyers and judges on the take get paid while the "plaintiffs" they used in their scam get $40?
The entire thing is a scam.

Yeah, the whole system has a few flaws it seems to be broken and I don't think Houston knows what to do with the problem. Here is that link again, now you know I knew better than to type a return after the link, but did I follow the rules that I know so well? Noooo..... I added a return and messed up my link, so here is the link again. http://www.lawyersandsettlements.com/settlements/13814/katrina-flood-victims-agree-20-million-settlement.html I'll bet that one works just fine. Now after a few words I'm sure I can use the return key to add more thoughts.

This is why lawyers do class action lawsuits. They make millions off the award. But the actual plaintiffs who sign onto these lawsuits generally get almost nothing. It's one reason not to sign onto any class action lawsuit unless it is out of principle. You certainly won't gain monetarily unless you are one of the lawyers.
Lawyers' fees in this type of suit are usually contingency fees, which means they take their fees from the award and depending on the suit it could be 20% or a third of the award. Take a third away and then figure out how much each plaintiff will get...
