I have carved out a perfect system which works well for me. In the beginning of the month, me and my husband goes to a supermarket to buy all the dry gorceries for the entire month. There i get offers like buy two and get one free. It always helps because the extra carries over for the next month. Vegetables and nonveg are purchased by my father in law. i think i shop better always I shop only for how much is needed. Making a list before leaving for shopping always help to reduce time spent in shopping. you can always compare the price of things in diffrent shops in local market and shop at the shop which offers the least but gives comparatively better qualit. Whole sale shops always charge less. Buying in bulk also helps you to ask the shop keeper to lessen an amount from the total bill.

Hello Malpoa, thanks for your response here. Yeah, compare prices in different supermarkets is what I practice to do . I get to receive many newsletter from the supermarkets near my living place. I will keep all of them and compare the prices. I like to buy things that is on promotions and I even stock up a few more quantity so it can be used in up coming months. I never think of buy groceries in whole sale shops. I think it is a good idea. Though they sell everything in bulks, I still can buy and share with my 2 sisters.

Yes you can share it with your sisters or even your neighbours. ALso the wholesale shops give in small quantity also in only in just quintals. If you are a regular customer, they even give you a discount. Also with some near by shops who offer products for a cheaper price, if you become a regular customer, they give a discount. Here I have two shops which give discount, one for grocery and the other for cosmetics. He charges more than 5-6 Inr for toilet paper...

In my family, I'm (wife) the one who did the job and sometime getting helps from parents. In my opinion on shopping for groceries, woman is always more detail in choosing which is suitable use, which and where is cheaper and which is the quality one; whereas men always simply choose as long as it is the right things to buy and not really compare price. If I ever need help to buy things from hub, I will list down the things in detail which brand to buy and where to buy. Else he may ends up buying things that I don't like to use or not in use and it will cause lots of waste. Regarding your concern on 1-5. 1. List down the things you want to buy before you go and go to the nearest groceries store that you used to visit, as you have used to know where the things is placed. Sometimes my mum will collect my grocery shopping list too and she'll buy it back for me, so that I no need to take another trip to the same store again on the next few days. 2. Get to know it from word of mouth or neighbor where to buy certain things cheaper than the other. Or, check out newspaper or supermarket newsletter on groceries offers. 3. Only buy those need to use and not necessary all things choose the top grade one. 4. Those things that you need to use daily, buy more to keep..like toothpaste buy 3 to keep instead of 1. In that case you no need to go frequent to grocery store to stoc your groceries. 5. It is very much depends on your family size and favourable food. For me who prefer simple cooking it is much more cutting down cost on buying cooking materials and ingredients.

Hello Lemonjude, Thanks for your response and all your valuable points here. I like to receive those newsletter and flyers from the supermarkets. Some of the supermarkets will have special promotion on certain items. I will buy more if I see the price is cheaper compare to usual because the promotion is not running everyday. For me, My hubby sometimes will help me shop for groceries too. Yeah, men just could not go so details when buying stuff. He always buys the things that is different brand on what we are using. And he always forgot to redeem the free gifts from the information counter. Some groceries will have promotion and free gifts.

1. I always go to shopping on weekends so I will have plenty of time for choosing goods. 2. If you want to buy some inexpensive goods, you can order those in the netshop. There're lots of shops in the internet. 3. You can make a shopping list then count it. In this way, you can review it before go to shopping. You also can manage your budget then clear some items in your shopping list. 4. You should buy a big refrigerator.

Hello Jen14ed, Thanks for your time here and you are so kind to answer all the above questions. For me, I have started to make a list since I saw amny Mylotters here give this ideal to me. I think it works! Sometimes, I like to take a look at newsletter from supermarkets. I like to receive newsletter from a famous hypermarket at my country which is Tesco! Tesco always gives the lowest price and they do have club card members. It means that you shop and collect the points, the more you spend the more points you get. The points can be redeem to many gifts.

Hello Mohitseth, Thanks for your response here. But I don't think all the woman are born to be a bargain queen. One of my friend is a stay at home mum. She never need to go to shop for groceries. Her hubs is an expert in buying all the groceries and stuff at home. He can even bargain in the woman crowd at the market! LOL.

Hello Krishnanmca, Welcome to Mylot! Hope you enjoy mylotting here! Thanks for your response. Yeah, at my home, my mum always the best shopper. She can shop what she wants to buy in a very short time. When I was a small child I was the little helper when my mom went for groceries shopping. I was there actually create mess and troubles for her, LOL.

of course we both me n my hubby does the shopping..once in a month.. I keep a diary top on the fridge..whenever i feel of something requires or about to finish i note it down in the list for next month's list..and last 2 days i add all routine requirements i.e veggies n fruits etc..then take out the old receipts of groceries and sum up the total of my list which gives me approx amount.. if that amount is greater than my budget then cut down or replace cheap items from list...my hubby just help me to pick up the things from shop..we divide the items and both start collect diff items....that how we shop groceries..Usually my hubby add some more items i.e snacks, drinks, chocolates and i add more fruits apart form the list at the shop..so the bill always increase from our budget:)..but now we both know this and we also keep extra money for the rest items too.. Definitely man cant do better shopping compare to women...God has exclusively given us this task of SHOPPPING..:D

It's usually me doing the grocery shopping in the family. Most of the time, my husband and I go together....and if he can't come with me, I go myself. But there have been a few instances when my husband has done the grocery shopping all alone. I make a list to ensure that I do not forget anything that I really need. At the store, I do check out different brands and their rates and weight and nutritional value before I get something. Besides vegetables, I do the grocery shopping for a whole month. After almost 10 years, I now know how much of what we would need in a month. I buy only seasonal vegetables and fruits and do not waste money on out-of-season and imported groceries. My husband is the one who is good at the budgetting and buying the cheapest thing...and that's why I try to tag him along when I can. In my grocery list, I avoid all the junk food (and if it doesn't enter my home, my kids don't crave them and even if they do, they can't do anything about it). So, there's no soda (on a regular basis atleast)...no chips and any of those kind of stuff.

I of course do my own grocery shopping. I find it very therapeutically relaxing to browse items and if I have some extra money, I buy little extra things which are very rewarding in itself. To minimize shopping time, I of course have my list prepared beforehand. Preparing the list beforehand also helps you in remembering everything you want to buy and also keeps you in your budget. Frugal cooking, I’m afraid is not very possible with the prices of most essential commodities reaching sky high. Our daily simple cooking of rice and curry and pulses is costing so much more that I really don’t know where to curtail what cost and with kids at home, you really need to buy something special for them on and off. However, I surf the net to try out new recipes so that I can add a little variety to our everyday food from common items I have at home.

I used to be the purchasing officer in my home front but have since relinquish the job to my other half cos he has proven to be better off than me. Give him a list of things needed with a tight budget and he'll come back exactly what I wanted. But if I am the one who do the purchasing I'll end up bringing the supermarket to my house as I will load the trolley of things I fancy but not really needing them. The economic situation has forced me to change seat with my husband. He is much better than me and find at the end of the day there is extra cash left.

We have always done it together and as we are bargain hunters we took a lot of time doing -- in place of recreation. Reading the ingredients is important if the food is not a fresh and/or living food. Here all the stores mail us flyers with the sale items pictured and instead of making up menus and then going to shop, we buy what is on sale and then figure out how to eat it.

In my family my dad shops for groceries.Previously my mom used to do it through home delivery but the shop keeper started giving us old things which made us to stop ordering from the telephone. If you have a reliable shopping website you can shop for items in a minimum time.To shop for groceries cheap try to visit supermarkets they give all the items at discounted rates. You have to sacrifice some things if you need to shop with a budget. You can place a bulk order in the beginning of the month and shop for groceries once a month. You can shop for groceries and cook frugally by buying the important things that you need.

hmm, I don't think I could leave grocery shopping up to someone else because often times there is things I've forgotten or some new item I want to try out. If I'm trying to get some work done I will hand this task over and hope for the best. Dont go to the grocery store hungry is my best advice and using shopping list is something that I've found really works for me and saves me a lot of trouble. My kids will ask me for something over and over and when we get home and I found I've forgotten it even so they are not happy campers (their cinnamon rice pudding). I think its good to know about each and every grocery store in your area because you have a background to compare prices. I've found that prices do not vary that much as some would suspect and its usually just a little. I use the BJ's wholesale club to shop for fruits because that's something we eat so much of and I know will not go to waste. I do not recommend using this store for each and every item you need for your household because its does add up because from my experience you end up buying so much stuff you really just do not need because there's things not found in other stores. I use the grocery store but will use many different stores to find certain groceries. I know Pathmark superstore has my vegetable mix I can't find at Acme and Acme has better quality foods I usually can't find at Pathmark. I also use my whole food cooperative store for my agave syrup because I don't like to use regular sugar (haven't for some time) and it can be used in everything (my sweet potatoes, fresh squeeze lime juice, etc). I think you need to always custom form your shopping trips and never go unprepared because thats when you spend the most and carelessly. I also recommend having every savings card for grocery stories because they do come in handy for certain sales and easier than using coupons. I never use coupons they send in the mail because its always new products being introduced that I would not normally use or frozen products that add up very quickly and not useful for families (it'd be like eating out everyday)

Hi vingyan. My parents buy the main groceries for us, they visit us once a month. As we do not have a transportation, it's not convenient for us to buy so much groceries at once. Another reason is that they want to see their grandson once a month. However, sometimes, i will shop for some groceries once a week. Most of the time i do it after my class. Luckily there is Giant nearby my college so that i can buy some necessaties from there. I did not waste the time on thinking what to buy in the hyper market. I have already in mind that what to buy and make a shopping list, therefore i will not miss out the things and waste the time on searching the items. Happy mylotting and have a nice day!

in my country woman is good in shopping and bargaining.so i think woman should only go to shopping, but now as i am in other country, here we both (me and my husband) go to shopping, but mostly i will only select the groceries and any other things needed for my house.only some times only my husband only selects some things.but he says me to complete the shopping in as less time as possible.but it is not possible for me to complete shopping in less time. i see so many varieties for one product i want to see and selects one from them .but my husband won;t like this and tells to buy any one we see . answers for u;r questions: 1.make a list of things u want urgently for ur house and with this there will be no time waste for u when u go to big malls. after u went to mall ,u go to the section u want and quickly select the items in ur list.go to other section ,after selecting is over in first section. 2.u can buy cheap items when there is discount sales in u;r area shops. or try to buy items in any exbitions or in large shops. or see or hear ur friends ideas where they buy cheaply in any shop. 3.if u make a list(as i told before),u know then, roughly the amount u have to spend. and take only the things which are in the list. if u take extra things ur budget can increase. so try to avoid extra things. 4.see for the grocies u need for month and make a list and write the quantity u want for a month in that list,if any things needed afterwards ,u can then take .but write the exact quantity u want.but after one month u can know the list things are sufficient or not, then at that time ,u can increase or decrease the quantity if u want. 5.depending on the family members u have and depending on the groceries u have bought,u can cook . cook just one or two items in a day,in this way u can save grocery u bought.don;t buy all frozen items and eat that only daily.they will cost more and not good to ur health.so try to cook daily just one or two items instead of eating frozen items or packed items.cooking items is only good to our health. don;t buy juices ,icecreams, cakes, pizza's outside.prepare them in house and eat fresh items ,and u also can save so much money also.fresh items will be in less cost and health will also be good.

1. Make a list of things to buy to save time. 2. If you can do with unbranded items go for them. however, there are times when the more expensive ones aren't really that expensive if they're really the ones that work or your family loves. 3. i think the moment you start looking at recipes is the moment you cannot cook frugally. there are many ready to cook items on the grocery these days. or you can buy your food cooked already (applciable only to small families). 4. buy the big sized items so that you can be guaranteed of doing groceries for only once a month. but i think this is impossible. ever wonder why most people get their salary twice a month ?

I am (wife) that does the grocery shopping in our house. I check out prices and try to get the best bargain. Once in awhile my husband goes and I can tell by the expression on his face that he wish I would just pick up the things so we can go home. I try and tell him we need to check prices and he just said okay whatever.
