Diabetes, energy drink link??

a coworker of mine has been feeling bad for about a month now. This past week he finally went to the doctor and was tested for diabetes. and well, he has type one diabetes. some of the people at work had kept warning him about the energy drinks he used to drink...alot!! and well, he had practically stopped drinking them awhile back. but, after a little research online, I see there is a link.. by what he says, his pancreas seems to have decided one day to just shut down? any one know if this is how type one diabetes usually plays out?
