I guess we've all heard silly questions and perhaps some of us have asked them without really thinking. I was reminded of this today upon meeting an old friend that I hadn't seen in a few years. During the conversation I mentioned that I was on the way to visit my brother, he looked a little surprised and then asked, "is he still living"? Several years ago I was told the following story. It seems this well dressed gentleman was walking down the street when he met an acquaintance who asked where he was going. "I'm go to the funeral of uncle Fred", was the man's reply. The other guy looked startled and then said,"why, is he dead? The guy telling the story said later that he felt like saying "no, We're having the funeral now, he'll die later anyway". Who has ever been asked a silly question and what was it?

Well, my grandparents from both sides are from Spain ,and I
could also become a spanish citizen if I wanted to since lately
they have a new law where you can claim the spanish citizen if
your grandparents are from Spain. Well, since our beloved Queen
of Salsa, Celia Cruz was a black lady ,and she represented cubans around the
world maybe that's why so many people think that most people in Cuba
are black. I really don't care ,but people still make such a big
deal about race.

Hi, Pose! Yes, I have encountered this kind of situations many times before. One of the obvious questions was in the clothes store at my place. When seeing a customer walks in, most of the sales girls would ask the same silly question that is if the customer is looking for clothes. Of course, what else?! I ever did reply that I was looking for food. Some would smile, others would just stare at me.
Other situation when a workmate saw that I have just arrived at the office and she still asked if I have just arrived!
Well, I guess things like this happen because sometimes some people have no idea what to say and they ask what they already know just to break the ice, which is clearly can be annoying to others.

Yes, I've been asked silly questions a lot. Quite a few of them are from my grandsons. We have been trying to tell the boys, don't ask a silly question when you already know the answer because it makes you sound "not smart." For example, one of the boys might ask what I am watching on TV when they can obviously see exactly what I am watching. Or they will ask if I am eating a sandwich when they can see that I am eating a sandwich. It's very silly and they already know the answer to these silly questions. We dont' want them to grow up and ask these silly questions all the time.

This reminded me of a question I was asked once at a restraunt. I ordered a Chicken Salad and the waitress asked me if I wanted chicken on it. I didn't know what to say at first then I just said "Well, yeah, it's a chicken salad after all". She didn't seem to clue in though. Still so funny.

I am asked them all the time and it has taken me years to break the habit of at least thinking of a snappy answer. Now I just go on as though no one asked me
anything other than a serious question. Every once in a while a smile leaks out and of course as soon as it does the game it up and someone is embarrassed. The last one I remember was a person I knew asked if I thought it was going to rain because I had my umbrella with me. No I don't think so, I'm carrying this in case a robber attacks
me and can catch him by the collar so he won't get away. RIGHT

Hi Pose123,
It is a Wonderful perception and yes, I too have come across such incident in my life. One particular event that I would love to mention is, when I went to a shopping mall with my friend recently. We were having a gala time when I suddenly slipped and fell with a bang in front of the shop I was about to enter. It was so sudden that before I could understand anything, my friend instead of helping me up asked me"did you fall down?", while at the same time I was being helped up by the shop keeper himself. Such a question that to from a friend of mine....I was speechless and did not know whether to laugh or cry? The pain in my right leg still
reminds me of that incident. Regards.

I am often asked "Where are you going?" "Where have you been?" Sometimes, I do not feel like to share. A lot of foreigners are complaining we chinese are too warm hearted, over offering hospitality, which sounds like intervening privacy, the priority in the western culture. We oriental people need to be aware of the cultural difference and remain in friendly distance, while providing adequate assistance when in need.
