Have you ever hit an animal while driving?

On my home tonight I hit a raccoon. I know that I killed it because it got hit squarely by the front tire. I saw it walking into my lane but it was too late. I swerved a little bit hoping to miss it but...thud. Then I remember something my dad told me when I swerved to miss a rabbit and ended up putting the car in the ditch when I was in college. He told me "next time just hit the animal. You end up causing more damage trying to miss it than if you just hit the darn thing." I don't like hitting animals or in this case killing an animal but I was on a four lane road and it could have really been a problem if I would have really tried harder to miss it. Has anyone ever hit and killed an animal or have you been successful in missing it?

I have not swerved to miss an animal yet, not had to yet. I have however had to slow down or come to a stop because of an animal, but this was only around town, where I was not driving real fast. However, I have hit 1 animal before, an armadillo. Luckily the poor little thing did not die, only hit it's head on the underneath of my car, but was able to still walk and not cuts or any other visible damages were found on the animal.
