Since you are a computer programmer then you could do very well on any of the freelance sites. Projects that require some expertise are usually better paid then more general projects. The only difficulty on freelance sites is getting your first project. Once you've done that then it gets easier. If you do try the freelance sites, a word of advice, make sure the person requesting the work has some good feedback before bidding.

For me, it is the writing sites that I focus on (Helium, Associated Content, Constant Content, etc.). Of course, that is because I am a writer by trade; it is only natural that I move from the print market to the online market. If you are good at writing, or have some specialist knowledge, you might want to check out the possibility of writing. But be warned, it is a lot of work---if you have no desire to be a writer, or lack the talent, there are easier ways to make money.
