One of the joys/stresses of being the parent of a teenagers is when your child begins to get behind the wheel of a car. My daughter got her restricted drivers license yesterday. I took her out for two VERY SHORT drives about a month and a half ago...I know...it was WRONG, but I did it. It wasn't horrible. Now we get to do this for real. I'm not sure how it will go. I'm hoping the driving lessons go okay. She actually waited until she was almost 17 to get her restricted, so she is more mature than she was at 15 when she could have gotten it. I'm pretty glad she waited. Does your teenager have their drivers license yet. How do you feel as a parent about your child driving? I have a friend that said it was a huge relief not to have to drive her daughter every where. This same child has already had a couple of accidents. I guess there is an upside and a downside to your child driving. What are your thoughts on this?

Neither of my girls rushed off to get her licence. The elder did get hers eventually and she drives well. Catching trains and buses and walking great distances to get to places is time consuming and such a hassle. The younger daughter, at 37 still does not have her licence and I hope she never does. The few times she's been behind the wheel of a car she has shown a distinct lack of co-ordination and therefore an inability to steer properly. I'm quite pleased she does not drive because I'm sure she would have either been in or caused a horrible accident by now....same with her son...he is 20 and I know that he is safe at home with his Mum, not hooning round the streets with his mates (he's into computer stuff).

I'll tell about it when I've experienced it. (Wink, inside joke with just myself.)

My kids are all grown up into their 30's. But in two years we will have a granddaughter driving, Yikes do I feel old. But she so far is a very responsible girl and I have a feeling she will not change when she drives.

I don't have any kids and can only go by my own experience. My mother taught my older sister to drive when she was 16 and she got her license then and had no problems. I took driver's education in Junior High school and got my license when I was 14. The difference was that I had a teacher who taught you to be all uptight and not relaxed as a driver. So I came out of driver's ed. as a very tense driver which makes for reduced reaction times among other things. I was in an accident at age 15 which was not entirely my fault since a car stopped short in front of me and its brake lights were not working. But because I was such a tense driver, I overreacted and hit the brake peddle of the cheap little car I was driving on the side and it bent over with no braking occuring and I was too tense and not experienced enough to try to stear around the car, although there was not enough time anyway. Later when looking at the car, my dad was able to easily straighten the brake peddle with one hand and without using any leverage. Fortunately I have learned to be a more relaxed but very careful driver and have not had any accidents since then.

For us it was a relief to have another driver in the family but it was one of the scariest things that can happen to a parent. We were very lucky our oldest was our most responsible to we were less scared with her than the other two.
