Why can't people spell?

Is it laziness or just stupidity? I wonder if people just get in a hurry and don't spell check or if they just don't care or do they really not know how to spell. I find it so hard to read things when people misspell words or misuse them. It drives me up the wall. What about you?

No No No. It is not people who don't speak English as their primary language that I am talking about. I applaude you for trying, and generally it is obvious when English isn't the native language because you try harder to make it right. I appreciate that. It is people who abbreviate or use slang that makes it harder to read responses. I am glad that we are able to communicate with people from other countries in here. Thank you for your response and please understand I am not condemning people from other countries by any means.

It bothers me too. If there is a lot of really bad spelling I probably wont bother replying to something on here.

I agree. Sometimes it is so bad I cannot even understand what they are trying to say.

I know what you mean. I posted about this the other day (no one replied though) so maybe it only bothers you and me.

I know there are A LOT of people here who do not speak english and I think this is a great leaning tool for them and I applaud them for trying. That being said, it burns my biscuits when people are lazy and abbreviate everything, it is difficult and a waste of time trying to read those responses. If you cant type out full words than just dont bother posting in the first place. We all make spelling mistakes and like me, my space key sticks so I have to be careful, but small errors here and there are fine, Mylot is very slow and sometimes it takes forever to edit a response.

I agree everyone makes mistakes but it is when you are too lazy to write out the whole word making it more difficult to read a response. If it takes longer to translate the abbreviations than to read the whole response then it is not worth my time. Thanks for your reply

I know what you mean.. People nowadays can't spell due to some reasons that I can name a few: There is now a so-called SMS wherein you send SMS messages in your mobile that you just spell the word how it is pronounced; another is there is no spelling classes no more for kids!!! But anyway, yes. Laziness is one thing but I don't think its because of stupidity.

I agree with you. Isn't it sad how schools have gotten so slack on education?

We all make silly spelling mistakes sometimes just because we hit the keys in the wrong order and don't spot it. If mylot is very slow I sometimes do not correct as it seems to take forever and sometimes your response is lost. What gets to me most is when people use abreviations as they would on a mobile. Those who make the effort when english is not the first language, I respect for trying

Well there is the fact that mylot has a lot of members from different nationalities and may have a problem with some english words or wordings or they could be like me before mylot I didn't write alot so we are relearning how to do things we were taught in school I still have problems spelling certain words or not knowing where and when to use the punctuation most times, but I try If you don't understand it ask them what they mean just like when they do not understand what we mean they ask us for more information or what we mean..I haven't been in school for 16 years and didn't finish high school. So there's alot I need to learn and relearn..

Congratulations on trying to relearn! Been there, done that - only in Math! But your post was very easy to read. You did not use that computer shorthand of mixing letters and numbers or letters only for us to try to understand what you were saying. Now, here's one: "AB, C D Puppies." "L, M N O Puppies." "O S A R." "O, I C D Puppies!" You see how hard it was on your first try? - It's that kind of thing that drives me crazy, not the fact that you don't remember or have to relearn to communicate. I appreciate that and encourage you with kudos to learn more!!

I think it is a combination of things: 1. it isn't taught in school for years like it was when I was a student 2. younger generation uses so much computer shorthand so they don't remember how to spell correctly...they haven't learned it from repeatedly using the proper spellings 3. laziness 4. lack of knowledge Then there are other reasons: 1. dyslexia 2. simply typos from typing too quickly 3. don't use spell check I can usually read what they are saying unless they use alot of the shortened lingo they are so fond of. When they use it, I simply pass by their discussions or their responses...I do not even bother trying to decipher what they are trying to say...so it doesn't bother me. If it is mispelling, I give them the benefit of the doubt and chalk it up to typos...since I sometimes reverse letters when typing too quickly.

Well people just get lazy and they type so fast, they don't feel like fixing it.

I couldn't agree with you more that there is a problem when you can't use proper grammar and spelling when you are replying to something that so many people are going to read. I have no idea if it is the laziness factor or not, but I know I just hate the idea of someone reading something I posted and thinking to themselves, "Boy, she should go back to school because she can't spell a thing!" I mean really, does it take that much time to make sure you are allowing other people to understand you by checking your spelling.

I tend to get into a hurry when I misspell things and sometime sI dont know how to spell it and just sound it out.I guess I really shouldnt have cheated on my spelling tests so much in school. It really doest bother me as long as there whole post isnt a bunch of gibberish. As long as I can understand what they are trying to say its all good.

Me too. I wonder if being in chat rooms and IM'ing so much is just destroying some people's ability to spell. So much shorthand involved there.

I know me myself... I am so very busy (multi tasking and such) that I misspell and invert letters all of the time I try to reread my posts first but sometime things just slip by and I get a misspelling. Some people just have so damm many misspellings that they must not even look at what they are posting and that is just wrong.... For those that do this..... Please check for major mistakes (such as the whole post) it will help with the flow of this whole system since we will not have to decypher just to read.
