Doing laundry: non-he detergent in a he machine? What about fabric softener?

We purchased a he washing machine a few months ago and when we did I had about a half a bottle of regular non-he laundry detergent left and a bunch of free sample laundry detergent. The bottle I have is All 2x, the he all I buy is All 3x. I know he machines need less detergent and regular detergent can cause over soaping IF you use the regular amount. Has anyone tired using regular detergent in a he machine? If so, how much did you use? Half of what you normally would? What about fabric softener? Is there such a thing as he fabric softener?
