Holding onto Clothes

Hi everyone, This one is for all the packrats!! I love to hold on to clothes that no longer fit or are out of fashion just in the hope that maybe one day they will.. Was wondering if anyone else does that and how does one get rid of this habit. For me, I've been trying to clean out clutter and get rid of old clothes by giving them to charity but I still keep back many. So, do you also hold onto old clothes and why? And if not, then how do you do it?? Thanks in advance!

Your discussion made me laugh. When I think of all the clothes I had when I was younger, that they now call "Vintage", haha, I wish I had them all! Talk about prices and what they are worth today. So, I say, hang onto the one's that still look good because they might be worth hundreds in a few years. You never know......darn, I wish I had that Poodle skirt, lol!

OMG....I had a poodle skirt and I hated it!! It wasn't even in my time warp. It was my mom's "fashion statement"! She just for some reason felt the need to dress me in it. I was the only kid in my class to have one, I think. I do sometimes wish I'd saved some of my 70's relics....some of them really did make a comeback didn't they?

Hello Pmalik, I like to keep hold on some of my old cloth too, provided they are in excellent condition. Who knows the old fashion can be back again! But for those old cloth that are too old to be worn, I will just throw it away or cut the cloth into rag to use as a wiper. I guess this is a way to save some money.

I give a lot of my clothes to the women's shelter, if they are still good. Now here is something I saw at a garage sale...Clothing cut up in squares for quilting. The lady who did this said the garments either had a stain or some other defect which made them unwearable and she was selling them by the bundle. The stain or whatever had been cut out and thrown away. The bundles had enough squares to make a nice sized quilt. She also had some quilting patterns that she was selling. I do have some I still keep but they are pieces that never go out of style like the pencil skirt. Or some I update with accessories, like using wide belts to cover the wide waistbands or even a thin long scarf under a plain collar. I do like to shop so I have to get rid of some to make room for the new. Have you ever thought of doing a clothing swap with your friends or even a thrift store? We have a clothing swap store and a book swap store where I live. I find some great stuff in these stores.

I'm a practical person, so I don't keep clothes that are no longer useful to me. I get rid of them by giving them to people who need them more. I just take out of my closet the things that I don't need and give them away, sometimes to charities. I feel good when I give my stuff to people who really need them.

I am notorious for holding onto old clothes...either ones that no longer fit, or i just don't wear any more. i am always able to convince myself that somewhere down the line, that piece of clothing will come in handy! maybe i can re-purpose it, or update it to be more with fashion somehow...of even better yet, maybe i will lose a little weight and be comfortable wearing it again! Many times i have been able to take a blouse or a skirt and make some minor alterations and be able to workit back into my usable wardrobe...but i often find myself setting these items aside for this purpose..then never getting around to it. I have many pairs of pants that just need a little seam re-sewn or a button or zipper fixed....if i ever found the time/remembered that it needed to be done!

hi fruitcakeliz, wow.. i agree.. i keep holding on to clothes in the hope of losing weight or reprposing them.. i love the fact that you're able to make minor changes and add an item back into your closet. i think that's quite creative.. however, repairs are soemthing that i guess, most of us arent too great with, now., are we??

I have that, also. I tend to keep cloths that I like even if they no longer fit me, and since I care very little about fashion, I don't toss cloths that might be considered not in fashion. I do however try to go through my closet and get rid of cloth I will never wear.

even if clothes come back into fashion, there is just a little bit of a twist that makes it different than it was the first time it came into fashion. i clean out my closets once a year and get rid of stuff (i get a lot of hand me downs).

It really depends on the the type of clothing...if it's something that I no longer fit in I might keep it like if they are pants that won't really go out of style incase I do end up fitting in those clothes again, but if they are out of style then I will give them to goodwill and let other people to have them...I am a packrat but definitely not of clothes it seems like of everything else...lol.

I used to do that, thinking that they would come back into style again or whatever. Ya know what...even if they do....they are not the same. I've got some sweaters & tops that I've had for years. They are classics and never seem to get outdated. I'll never part with them. Other things...If I haven't worn them in a long while, I'll just donate them. I like things tidy and I don't like lots of clutter. There was a time that I felt that I had to hang on to each and every gift even if I didn't like it or had no space for it. I'd pack it in a box and store it. I finally just cleaned thru everything and I don't miss anything that I got rid of at all. The stuff all found good homes or was just junk. The feeling of being clutter free is so much nicer than being over-whelmed with useless "stuff". Another thought would be to sell the items and then if you really wanted...buy yourself some new clothes.

i'm a bad one for holding on to things, but have learnt to let go of clothes. thou they do stay for a long time. i give them to charity, and the last lot went to friends, cause the clothes were just that bit to good, and i know the kids would love them. i've still got my wrangler jeans, one pair had shrunk and the other hasn't fitted me in a number of yrs. but with a bit of hard work i can now get the shrunk one on but not done up and the other one on done up but don't want to sit down. that's what i use to help keep me going on my weight thing. as for tops i'm not going down a size in the shoulders, so have gotten rid of the tops that are to small. i remember my aunt had just thrown out a pair of white suade knee high boots right before they came back in fashion. hold out for some things they come back. have fun with the clothes clean out.

I have heard for years that if you hang onto clothing long enough they will come back in style. Fads come and go. Sometimes they come back with a new twist. So, I say don't throw anything away. What you save may end up being the next fashion craze.

Before I can't let go of my old clothes even if it doesn't fit me anymore. I hate my older sister when she goes to my closet and take my old clothes out, the ones that I don't use anymore and give it to my cousins and some relatives in the province. I use to tell her that I still wear them all. But it changes a few years ago when our country suffers a strong typhoon that devastated many parts of our region. I realized that I need to help others even on my small way. And I started packing my old stuff including old clothes and give it to some people who needs it more. You can donate it to some charities who are accepting this type of donation. I think most of the orphanage will gladly accept it. You will feel better after, just think how this clothes will give happiness to others. Some of them consider it as their major necessity while with some of us its just clothes that we can buy anywhere. Happy mylotting!

I did hold on to clothes before because I never had a system in which to get rid of them. When I saw how many clothes were in my closet I would just put it off another day because having to choose which ones to get rid of confused me. So, what I do now is instead of leaving my clothes pile up for one day of choosing which ones to get rid, now every time I buy new clothes I immediately make a decision on which ones I will give a way once I put the new clothes in my closet. Since I feel I don't need so many clothes anyway I might, for example, buy a new shirt and pants and when I get home and hang them up, right away take out an old shirt and a pair of pants and give them away to charity.
