Have you ever had a roommate? How was the experience? I'm planning to move out of my parents house and move in with a roommate near my school and really need to know what to expect.

I stayed in Hostel for Two years during my M.B.A. course. I had a good roommate and till date we are very good friends. Only thing which perturbed me during my stay in the hostel was my ragging. It was not a good experience. So be careful when and if u r ragged. Dont be aggressive. It may fetch a great opposition to you.

I'm typically not agressive to begin with but I'll watch out for that. Thanks for commenting.

I have never had a roomate. I don't think that I would like it, as I enjoy being alone.

I am living one now (late in my life)and I am lucky that things are going great. Some things to consider: 1. Decide what your must haves and have nots are for a roommate. 2. Get someone with similar views as you about housework, TV --if shared, having friends over, romantic interest over, and schedules that won't conflict. (e.g. a night owl that keeps you up all the time) 3. Make a schedule together on duties if needed. 4. Get a credit check if necessary -- or at least references of some kind. 5. Don't get a roommate out of desperation, be selective. Good Luck!

Yes. I wish I had gotten to know him better before we moved in together as I discovered we were better friends than roommates. One thing I would do is sit down with your intended roommate, put your heads together and create some ground rules concerning certain things for example: -Loud music (When it is and isn't acceptable) -Identification of Communal and private property -Bill paying -Rules concerning entertainment of guests and parties -Distribution of labor (Cleaning and other chores) These are just a few things. Also take this time to let your roommate know your quirks and find out some of his or hers. This way the two of you can exist peacefully without killing each other. Good luck!

Yes. When my husband and first moved out together we got a three bedroom apartment with a friend of mine. It was not fun. She would have people at all hours of the day and night, she let her boyfriend stay over and cook and shower there all the time but refused to pay more than a third of the bills. One day we complained about her boyfriend always pushing the temperature of the air conditioner down to 65 so when he left the apartment that day he cranked the heat up to 90 just to be a jerk. We ended up opting out of the lease when she found new people who were willing to take over and finding our own place.
