HIM rock or metal?

In my opinion HIM are up there as one of the greatest bands to this day and im sure a fair few people would agree.!!
How would you then describe em...... are they rock or metal?
Id say the riffs are meaty enough to describe there music as metal,
but then the lyrics and singing style kinda scream pop rock.
I mean i dont wanna put to finer a point on it but ive only just got into there music and id like to exactly what im listening to so id really appreciate the the input.
What do you guys and gals think?
