What is an internet troll?

We often hear this term used on social sites or forum sites. To me it is someone who enjoys making other users lives miserable. They sometimes target people,or groups of friends on the internet. I have experienced a troll bothering me at several sites but there was one that almost made me unplug for life from the world wide web. Someone that I didn't even know on a personal level, not on my friends list or anything. This person found a blog that had been set up by one of my friends to help me with a financial issue I was having, and decided to spread lies about me as if they knew this information first hand. Kind of like a bully of sorts I suppose you could say. It was a hard time for me and I almost left that site because of it. Many times a trolls job is to make you quit,I believe. So what is your description of an internet troll? What do you think are the reasons they do what they do? Does mylot have any? Are there trolls offline as well?

Yes that is a Troll and I do remember the incident if I am on about the right Site, I also remember the Blog I was very angry about it all as People have no right to do this and specially not when they don't know you Even if they know you they should talk to you and not the whole world But Life is not like that, is it Sweetie, and it makes me so angry

Yes you are thinking correctly gabs my dear. I think I still hold some hurt from that. I barely go to that site anymore because well it seems like all my friends are no longer friends there. I mean other than you and a small few others. I can find you all here so why bother going somewhere I am not even noticed has being gone? I agree it is the world and life when it comes to being online. I just wish these people would stop and think and end their trollish ways

I have to agree with your both that site has really taken a turn for the worse. I find it much more enjoying here at mylot. Here we actually have conversations and build relationships and get to know on another. We even get to learn a thing or two along the way. Over there it seems to be all about how many page views one can rank up and the personalization of making a friendship has been thrown out the window. I'm sure glad to see the few good people I met over there, are here. Is that a new pic of Gissi Gabs?

That stinks when people do that. They don`t even know you. I think they just like to make people miserable. They get some sort of sick joy from hurting others. I`d even bet they do it in their real life too. I try to ignore people like that. After all they don`t know me and I don`t know them. I refuse to go down to their level and say bad things back. I think you can turn people like that in can`t you? I don`t know how but I have heard of others doing just that.

Yes sometimes they can be reported if they are open about it. But like purple said many are too cowardly to even to that let alone admit they are a troll to begin with. I can easily be hurt and upset when I am stressed and I am living in constant stress nowadays. But I do my bets to try not to let them get to me.

Sheesh purple it's real sad that people have to do that crapola! I know mylot has taken measures to help stop the attacking of our beautiful stars so it's not as easy as it was for "the star mafia" before. I'm glad you had some good people looking out for you to help restore your star to where it belongs! I swear people take such childish measures to try and make someone else have a bad day. Kind of like back in school when "the popular kid" has their group of friends and just because the popular kid doesn't like you they start teasing and picking on your so their little followers join the ban wagon and before you know it you're overwhelmed by one group of kids making you have a crappy day. Well at least we have our friends to help us keep our pretty little stars right where they belong right?

If they are nasty and verbally abusive to you, then you can report them. Apparently a group of people took a dislike to me, and they negatively rated me. My rating dropped 13 points literally overnight, which also makes my earnings drop. Since they did it without leaving messages saying who they were or why they were negatively rating me, I can't report them. I guess that I could let admin know about the substantial drop overnight and they could look into it, but I didn't choose to pursue that option, as my wonderful friends on here have pulled together and restored my red star rating.

Yeah, really hate those guys. I have had times when someone kept on sending arbitary messages and comments on my orkut account. Then there was a time when someone hacked into my mail account and locked me out. I really hate those times and these guys. Its like they don't have anything to do. But since online frauds and phishing have increased to such levels that I now keep in mind to never to accepts any friend request from unknown people and never to give my main email address on a link that looks phony. I believe that there are some real trolls out here in the real world. People who have nothing to do better than just interfere in other people's lives and make it more difficult for them. this is mostly due to jealous and enmity but there are people who love being trolls. I haven't faced any at mylot yet, just because of the excellent management of MyLot and am happy about it. Cause this is just the only place where I can and I do write whatever I feel, and share my feelings freely. Would hate it if trolls came across. Take Care

The one thing about trolls is they are good at hiding. Disguising themselves. I don't think there are many on Mylot but some people have encountered a troll a time or two on here. Mylot's management is excellent no doubt about it. The trolls never stay long but every site has to deal with them at some point.

Yes, they are called stalkers. A stalker has an end in mind, and that end is usually detrimental to the well-being of the person he's (or she's) stalking. It can be awful, I´ve experienced it when I broke up a relationship (two, actually), and those ladies just wouldn't leave me in peace. There are laws against stalking now, in many countries, I know for a fact in Germany. It's one of those crimes people have a difficult time to understand unless they experience it themselves. A troll basically stalks you, follows you, interfers with your activities, tries to make life difficult for you. Sick creatures, really. The thing is, the whole Internet is so little regulated that it's almost impossible to protect oneself from sickies like that.

I never thought of them much as stalkers but I guess you are right. They do stalk their victims,so in the end they are much like that.

internet trolls... we really dont know them and they dont know us. but they love making our lives miserable. by harassing in ways of words and making such false issues to us and to everybody else. for me trolls are everywhere.. may it be online and offline. people who are so rude and just making issues for us to suffer are trolls as well. they dont care what people think and they are even happier if they see someone else being off guard and knowing that they annoyed this person so much. they want someone to get hurt, to be annoyed, to feel angry with no reasons at all. they make false informations about us. making our life miserable where in fact it should not be happening. this life is full of trolls. someone we may even know... while others just hide behind the curtains... just waiting for a moment to grab us and then make us afraid of what has to offer.. maybe they just love and like to make someone elses life miserable... and i dont know why... jhelai

Do you think someone that goes around here on mylot and rates people,or groups negatively could be considered a Troll? Their intent is to upset us and this could be a way to do it here on mylot. Since many do hide and not just respond with a comment.

Well you've described exactly my thoughts as to what an online "troll" is and what they aim to do. Apparently there are some lurking around mylot however I am very thankful to have not run into any of them. I have however met lots of great people here and some with a sense of humor that is out of this world. I did have a troll taunt me and several other people in a yahoo chat room I used to frequent which in the end made me stop going there. I figured I had all my good friends on my IM list so I didn't need to go into chat anymore and that's when I started stumbling upon ways to earn online. In a way I'm thankful to that troll if he hadn't made my life miserable like he did, I probably would not have gotten to know the good people I know now.

Aw you are so sweet. I was very upset when all that stuff happened to me and now I barely go to that site anymore. But I have branched out I guess and am now doing other things. I guess in the end they helped us more than hurt us.

There in lies the problem hun,I have no idea where to search or what loose ends to tie up. I am a bit dumb when it comes to things like this and I am worried I won't get the right information.

Yeah it's weird how things work out like that. I was having a discussion yesterday with Lou our friend/boss about some of the stuff that has happened in our lives, and we both said at the same time "but if that hadn't happened Oscar ( my husband ) wouldn't be here. LOL! I guess everything truly does happen for a reason. I bet if we sit back and think we can find many situations in our lives that "wouldn't be" if something hadn't previously went bad before you know? How's little one doing back at school now? Everything good?

I guess that I have experienced my first Internet troll. Hmmm ... I wonder if the person will read this and take pleasure in being my first? I'm sorry that happened to you. *HUGS* I'm glad that you didn't quit the Internet, because then we never would have met. I have been having a really good time with you on here, and I'm so glad that we are friends. Lamb gave the "official" definition of an Internet troll, but I have talked to several people that think that trolls just want to anonymously make other people's lives miserable. That seems to be the consensus of people far more experienced with social networking sites than I am, so I think I'm going to agree with your definition. There are trolls offline, too, but for some reason these kind generally don't want to mess with me. I wonder why ...

I can't remember my "first" troll but I am sure it put me off pretty badly. However the one I spoke about hurt me more I think because I was vulnerable when it happened. I think you are right,I think a troll did have a hand in what you posted about. Whether or not they will come look here who knows, probably not,as I am the only one that has this as an interest. Seems like I am not that good at making interests that stick out I have a great time with you also Purple, this is why I don't want you to let this troll get the best of you.

Yes, things are always worse when we are vulnerable, and sometimes that one thing can be the thing that pushes us over the edge. Fortunately, you did not give in to the troll, which takes the power away from them. I just joined this interest, so I guess that will make us ranked #1 and #2 in it. WooHoo!!

Hey Angie Congrats on the 1000 posts. I agree with you that internet trolls are people who are rude to people on the internet for the fun of it and they kind of stalk groups of friends. But I think you should just ignore them and hopefully they will go away. I do believe Mylot probably has some trolls and I hope they stay away from us. Have a nice evening

Hi there Goblue love that name by the way. I think about every site that has a community type setting on it has these trolls. I do my best to ignore them but I also always have my guard up most of the time.
