Hi friends, In our place, we call the friends as machan and machi... Machan mean brother-in-law in the tamil language. Machi mean sister-in-law also we can use it for the boys too.. We treat the friends as a relations.. These are the two words that we use mostly among the friends by the boys. Girls use differently, but i don't know how they call themselves.. LOL How do you call your friends? Do you call their name by their nick name? Do you call them by their name? Do you use Mr./Ms/Mrs.? What is the favourite nickname that you use among your friends? Have a great day.

Hi dbu, well we call our friends by their first names usually. There are nicknames for a few. One friend is known as 'Bandit' because he lost half his arm in a meat machine (that's how he was introduced to me as), my man calls his workers 'moron' in English so they might not actually understand what it means. A lot of my male friends call me 'agapi mou' which tranlates as my love, or 'moro mou' which is my baby, but are encouraged to use my actual name. The term used to address a group of adult friends is 'pethia mou' which means my children. So it's generally just names and terms of affection. Any idea why words are underlined in blue?

thea I always loved that term agapi mou as my husband used to tease me with that as we are neither Greek but it always made me feel so nice. That blue stuff seems to be some new gimick of mylot but why i dont know.its really sort of irritating to me. why mess around with my lot when its not broken?

Agapi mou, features quite heavily in lots of bazouki love songs too. It's really used as a term of affection rather than just for couples, we refer to our children as that.

hello dbu! well its nice to know that you treat your friends there are relatives...:-) here in my place, there's so many ways to address a friend...depends on how close you are or depends on a person itself... i hear my husband calling some of his friends as 'bok', 'tol (short for utol - a street language for brother) some also uses 'pare' or 'bai' (in cebuano) with me, i use to call my friends from school in their nicknames...but sometimes i do give them pet names...hehe and some girls also called each other as 'sis' (for sister) and now i have a friend who calls me 'best' and i do call her that way as well...for we feel that we are already best of friends now... have a nice day!

Machan, This is a great topic. We at times called friends as Bro (Brother) Or in Bahasa Malaysia we will call 'kak' (for elderly girl) and 'bang' for (elderly guy). To be polite, we usually call 'Cik ( for girls = Ms) and Encik (for guys = Mr) However, the businessmand really have PR, they will call girls - Hi, lenglui (pretty girls) and sure this aunties and ladies will buy more...LOL

Dear dbutheking, Aiya, the avatar doing karate, but ended up swollen hand! Let him train under Jackie Chan! PR means Public Relations, so all this young businessman very clever to attract customers. They will call all these ladies 'lenglui' (Pretty girls in Chinese), so when these ladies heard being called 'lenglui' they will buy more and forget to bargain

Most commonly it's by first name, but it all depends on how close the friends are as to how they call them. Nicknames here are usually close to their name... If we feel their close to us, we'll call them our brother or sister depending on if their male or female...

Hey I never knew that you were from Tamil nadu!. Since I'm from kerala, I understand tamil very well In malayalam, the similar word will be aliya or aliyo or we call them aliyoooooooo But I always called girls with respect & 'Da' seems to be cool word. Not the 'da' in tamil, but da in malayalam is the word used to call other guys especially friends; however, I use 'Da' as a shortform for Darling Happy Lotting

Hi prasanth, Yes, akka and anna are used for the elder friend. This type of discussion is allowed. We should not use other language discussions. But, we can use the other language words which is given as the info to the other users. MyLot expects that our discussion and response should be understandable to all. So, you can see machan and machi is the only 2 words from other language i used and i also tell them what it is. Have a great day,

hi dbutheking here in the US we usually call our friends by'there first names, like Bob or Bill or Anne orDelores, and older friends by mrs so and so or mr. so and so. My sons two friends I call Mike David and Micheal as they are both MIkes and it would be confusing. Some here call me by my first name Patsie and some Mrs. hatley, just depends i guess.we are a bit more informal than some countries i know.

Hi dbutheking! I don't know have you started this discussion seriously or for fun. But we used to call our friend differently for fun. Sometime we call 'Raja' to our friend, once we started to call them like girls in our regional language. Most of the time I prefer to call my friends by his nickname, don’t like to call them by mr./ms./mrs.I used to study in my regional language, so all our group was from middle class and in our time most of the people used their real name. No nick name system was their. But right now i love nickname like Sid, Avi. Have a nice day! Cheers Ranvir

Hi dbu the king How was you're doing in your new place? So, I found this discussion of yours that I haven't responded! Hehehe.. In my country, we don't have and particular nickname for our friends, just call them their first name or the shortest and nice part of their name, for example, "Natalia" called "Nata" only. Sometimes a group of close friend, they call themselves BFF (Best Friend Forever), yeah, it's in English. For me, my name is Priscilla Angelia and my friend call me "PA" So, really there's no certain or common rule here. Waw, it's nice to know in your place, people call their friends as a relations (brother-in-law, sister-in-law)!
