My son brought home his math homework tonight, but he did not bring home his book. He was given a paper that was photo copied to do. He says they have not gone over it in class and I do not know what to do either. I even did a Google search to try to find help, but I can find nothing on crowded points.
It is a crowded points puzzle. There are 9 points crowded together in a square room. The points do not like being crowded. Draw 2 squares so that each point will have a room of its own.
I don't know how to do it only making 2 squares? Any idea?
Have your kids ever had homework that you could not help them with?

hmmm......*pondering the problem*
now, did it SPECIFICLY say squares? or just draw two BOXES inside the first one? Because if they just have to be boxes, i can do it....but squares (meaning all sides the same length, four right angles) i am just not able to picture it...but if by squares, you just mean 2 boxes, here is my interpretation....(prdon me for having to do this in a coupleof posts....as i can only upload one picture each time and i want to do it in steps.
Ok...so first, ou have a box..or a "room" with nine points in it...

They have to be squares though, not rectangles.
You have to draw a square on a 45 degree angle that is the same size as the original square on top of the first square. Then you draw a square inside that square. So 8 of the points are in triangles and the middle one is in a square.

Personally I can see where this would be Very frustrating and confusing for sure. Especially since the teacher chose not to go over this one with the Class before handing them this as well. I have never heard of this one either, unless it could be something like Sudoku or something like that. Hopefully there is an answer to this one without having him get in trouble for not being able to do this homework assignment as well.

Hi Lilybug, although a past teacher, it is awful what children are given to do for homework. I have a mind set against mathematics and was in the last group to get into college because I ha a science subject but not Mathematics. Thank God.I just cannot do mathematics and had to relearn all over again as each child reached decimals etc. Honestly. I kid you not. I have a more than average I.Q and cannot do even simple maths. The kids these days are just smarter too. so that doesn't help either. I hope that you get this sorted out and then speak to his teacher. Blessings

Yeah it seems to be getting a lot harder to help your kids with homework. When I was in high school many years ago we didn`t have to take algebra. I went back to college for a year and now I understand it a little but not enoough to help my 15 year old stepson.

Heyya lilybug! That is actually a growing problem. There are a lot of assignments that children get now that most parents just can't help with. I have had a time or two that my girls brought home some homework in which I had a hard time understanding what they were looking for in the answer(not having the instructions and all). My oldest girl is in highschool now and I know it won't be long before she has something I won't be able to help her with. We still have the internet though.

I certainly don't look forward to the day that this happens to me. So far, my daughter is only in the first grade so it hasn't been an issue that we've had to deal with yet. However, I know that the day that we do have to do it is going to come eventually.
I remember growing up after my father passed away, I didn't have anyone to help me with my math homework as there was only my mother and she hadn't gotten past algebra when she was in school. We learned geometry, algebra 2, pre-calculus and calculus together.
As far as the question that you have, I'm afraid that I can't help you with that one without actually seeing the work sheet.

Though he puzzle you gave out was pretty easy, but no, I don't have any kids yet. Ya I do have a younger sister, whom I have always helped with her mathematics problems and her computer science questions.
Though there are times when I do not remember the topic very well but I still try and revise the topic and try to help her out as much as I can.
Personally though I would always prefer to put my sister for some extra after school coaching.

hello lilybug,
i know how you feel for i do the same too most of the time. we wanted to help them but we can not do anything.
sometimes, we worry too much not knowing that our kids are way much better than us. they can solve it by themselves. sometimes, they are just saying that they don't know where in fact they can. maybe they are just tasting us.
