I love Stephen king's books! He is my favorite author! I have read his books and watched these books turn into films. After watching ther films, I sometimes find myself rereading the books. i look for little places where film has changed the original story. I wonder where he comes up with the many ideas for his books. The horror genre would not be the same without him!

i agree there is none better. once i ran out of stephen king books to read i moved onto dean koontz. him and stephen have a very similar writing style. they are my favorite horror genre authors. i love that their horror falls in the realm of the supernatural as well as the psychological. i think that is why their brand of horror is so successful.

Were 33 books turned into movies or was it 33 movies (or mini-series) made from his books (and short stories). Some like the Shining, Carrie, and Maximum Overdrive were redone. Although the TV version of the Shining sucked, the re-make of Maximum Overdive, Trucks, had a more Stephen King ending. Then there were the sequels (how many Children of the Corns are they up to ? - altough the upcoming new TV version is supposed to be Stephen King's real version). To me, a lot of the movies don't measure up to the books. Christine is one example. For The Running Man, did the producer read more than the book jacket notes because the movie told a whole other story? For me I guess, I like The Stand. I've read both versions. (The original printed version was abridged to make ot shorter. Later when King was more famous, he made the publisher print the complete version.) The mini-seeries also seemed to follow the book fairly well. (I might be biased also because I was in Las Vegas when they were filming there downtown on Fremont Street. Right after te filming was done, they enclosed Fremont Street to make it a mall.) For a complete list of King's works that were converted to film (movie or TV) search on his name on the Internt Movie Database (imdb.com). Counting the sequels where only the ideas or characters were used, there are now 111 movies or TV episodes based on King's works.

Hi. Thanks a LOT for that information. 111 ! WOW! I agree with you and that doesn't happen only with Stephen (of course!). Generally the book is better. Just going a little off topic here: As you might agree, he likes to write about cars. "Misery" (the book paul sheldon is writing:"fast cars"), "Christinne" and "from a buick 8". You are obviously a fan, so I ask you: do you know something about this? Have you read or listen something about this? Is he crazy about cars or something?

He might like cars, but I think he has a real phobia about trucks. There was the short story that became Maximum Overdrive, there was the rendering truck in one of his early books, and there were the trucks that sped down the road in Pet Cemetary, including one that killed the baby. Those were all written BEFORE he was hit by a truck.

Although I read only one of his books (The Talisman), I consider Stephen King a good and entertaining writer. I like the way he describes scenes in the story. I simply don't like reading horror stories; that's why I never read another. My favorite books are of military or espionage in nature.

i love stephen king he is one of my most favored authors. i have read all his books and it is hard to pick a favorite one. i did enjoy the 2 that he wrote with peter straub, the talisman and its sequel, blackhouse. i have had a love affair with all his books, i remember that at some point i had to stop reading the dreamcatcher because it freaked me out so much.

yeah it was made into a movie. and i must applaud the director's artistic vision. i love to watch movies that are adapted from books because i like to see if me and the director have the same vision. i remember watching IT, now that movie really freaked me out, that was my introduction to stephen king and that is when i fell in love with his writing. wow, to this day i do not like clowns. pennywise re-inforced a long standing fear and aversion to them, has anyone else seen this movie or read the book?

I loved his old stuff but all the recent books either are really boring, or it seems like they've been done before. My favourite would have to be his short story collection: Night Shift. I love short stories and this books seems to have the best of everything from him... well for me at least.

Hi. Thanks for the response. Well, I am a fan, but not a huge fan I must say because I haven't read his recent books. About that "night shift" collection, that seems a nice idea. I am very busy at the moment and short stories could be the ideal for me. It's a collection of books or a collection of stories in just one book?

It's a collection of some of his short stories he's written in the past. Two stories that are in it that I remmeber the titles are Children of the Corn, and The Mangler. It's a fairly old book mind you, published in the late 70's early 80's, so you might have a harder time finding it... try looking in used book stores or on the internet. Someone will probably have it somewhere =)

Hi, CALLIBAN. I do know that he has movies that are made from his books. I have seen "Rose Red" and "The Tommy Knockers." I can never seem to understand him and his books. But, I love the mystery that he gives unto his readers. I would love to see John Saul make a movie out of his books. I know that I would enjoy this.

i was never really a reader.... I find reading boring... way back i think high school, we went over my friend's place and her brother was a real fan of books... his books were all over the place.. he had almost 5 or 6 big shelves of books... i was so amazed but interest wasn't there... I borrowed one and it was S. king's book... the shining... i was so amazed at how wonderfully it was written.. since then i became a reader.. s. king was the one who actually lit my int erest into reading

Hi, jd107nette! Thanks for your answer. Reading is a pleasure that has to be discovered! I am very proud to say that at least 3 friends of mine started to read because of me, cause I convinced them "that" was a great book (and it was!). I think this love for reading has a lot to do with our children habits...When I was about 8 years old, my mother gave me a book and after that I started to do all the collection. I was loving the stories!! And probably because of her (god bless her!), today I LOVE writing... x PS1 - My advice: read "Misery, the las chapter" from S.King ;) PS2 - The shining is a great movie as well ;)

Stephen King is personally my favorite author, and I would go so far as to say that he should be considered in the top three greatest writers of the last fifty years. He has written over a hundred books and short stories, and is the creator of the greatest modern Epic, The Dark Tower series. This series encompasses almost all of his works, touching other famous books of his such as The Stand, Cell, 'Salem's Lot, Eye of the Dragon, Insomnia, Hearts in Atlantis, and many others.

Hi! Thanks for your answer! Yes, I agree with you! He has LOTS of his books turned into movies! But now I am curious: you say, "he should be considered in top three greatest writers of the last fifty years.". So, what are the other two top writers in your opinion?
