My husband and I were just channel surfing and we passed the weather channel as they were showing pictures of what was going on in Austrialia.... they woke up to red skies due to a dust storm that has covered the east coast!!!! I am going to look into it more and see what they are saying, but this is totally interesting to me!!! Seriously.... could you imagine!!!! What would you think if you woke up to red skies??

that is really scary bookreadermom, i saw it on TV, it was a like a storm from MArs or something. To be honest with you all, that is the first time that i ever saw a red star. I was also thinking as if we are on another planet or the atmosphere had changed some how. this is the view that i saw in you-tube later on. They said it was due to a dust storm that covers the entire east coast. I am going to read more up on it as I find it on the weather channel. This is so odd, I just never have heard of anything like this!! thanks for the response and have a great night!!

i'm a crab on this topic, it's been all over the news and i'm sick of it. i'm not having a a go at any one i'm just saying what i feel. cause if i wrote in to the weather channel it would be a really rude email. i'm from the part in southern new south wales that is still drought strickened. back i april we had our worst dust storm i can remember, it was just as bad as what they've had up north, but no one care about us down here. we had high ways closed and you couldn't see 20m away from you, there was dust everywhere. i had it a inch thick in my tack shed that included my rugs that were up high and had trouble hearing a heart beat of a foal, the wind was that bad. the mare was not her usual self and she lost the foal a few weeks later. we just watched the paddock disapear, what was left of it. we've been watching our paddock go for a few yrs, dust storms happen every week when the wind the blows hard enough. thou for once we were to missed it, we got rain long last. so my thing is city people have no concept of what happens out in the country and that really is annoying. you will get dust storms all over the world, just depend on where you are. but when a fair bit of australia is drought and dirt for paddocks that where it all comes from.

Wow, I could not imagine what it is like to have a dust storm like that, but I am sooo glad you responded to my discussion and pointed that out... you are right we would never know about those since I never heard of this on the weather channel and my hubby is an avid weather channel watcher because of his job -- maybe you should send them an email that mentions it as it might perk up somebodies ears and then you would get either more recognition for the situations around you or you could start a new segment on the weather channel.... I am sorry that they dont say much about your area, but I am glad to hear you finally got some rain!! thanks for the response and have a great day!

hi bookreadermom hi again Just once I saw red skies in'New Mexico with a dust storm just clogging the air with red dust. we never see that in California. But we see red tide when the algae , red algae, clog up the tide and turn it red, it sometimes kills fish too.

this is the first I have heard of this and it is amazing to me... I actually just found a picture of it and posted it as well. oh that is sad that it kills the fish, being from Michigan we have the great lakes but we also dont deal with much of a problem with our waters except them being brown due to the sand....and we have had alot of low tides a few yrs back. thanks for the response and have a great night!

I don't know what I would think if I woke up to red skies. I imagine it would be really weird. I was always taught not to panic but this might be a different situation. My preacher and his wife are doing some world traveling and they are in Australia right now. I wonder if they are in this dust storm. The last time we heard from them, they wre doing good, though. I wonder if it was in a certain part of Australia. Kathy.

Yes we are taught not to panic, but I dont know if I would be able to stay calm if that was to happen around here either... I am going to look up and see if I can get an update on the situation over there and then start a new topic on it, since it is something that just caught me off guard and fascinated me at the same time. thanks for the response and have a great day!
