I use three players for three different purposes. 1. Windows Media Player 11: The best quality that you can get, especially for audio. Configure SRS and WOW effects properly and you will be floating in a music heaven 2. The KM Player: Best to watch films as it has an option to fit to entire screen with a touch of shortcut. Also, there are other useful features and nice shortcuts that enhance film watching. Need less to mention, it supports every damn media type there is including pictures and is damn good at it. 3. VLC Media Player: Another good option to watch films in, offers not best quality to watch films in, but offers many features. Not expected, but it also turns up to be a nice video editor. VLC means power. Recently, I had my ears on Windows Media Player 12 and after hearing music in that, everything else is sounding like noise to me.

WMP is the worst player of them all. Also, if you have to change the EQ etc for audio to make it sound good; you can't have good speakers ;) If an artist makes a CD with a certain sound on it, why do you have to change it?

We do not change it but we do enhance it. In that enhancement department, WMP is great. But it is my opinion only. I enhance audio to make the bass sound properly, bring the high frequencies which normally do not surface due to my poor earphones. If I had a great audio system and great studio quality speakers, there would have been no need to these 'enhancements' as you said.

Since it seems you are using OSX I will suggest VLC Media Player (www.videolan.org/vlc) it's probably the best player out there. Has support for almost every codec and there are endless of settings too ^^ It is open source and cross platform so it is completely free. Lightweight as well :) Good luck!

Just read the title "for windows" haha, so Ill keep going: Also you can install the CCCP wich is a community codec pack that works great with Windows Media Player (if you don't want to install more players) it also comes with Media Player Classic which is pretty similar to VLC. Although it processes certain files differently, such as FLV files (vlc is better at this) otherwise theyre pretty much the same ^^
