Everyday Southern Foods

I am southern born and raised. I started a recipe blog with many of my family recipes. The difference is they are recipes I cook everyday. Not fancy recipes that require 20 ingredients and 2 hours to prepare. Just normal everyday things that we eat and love. I would love some feedback on the blog. What would make it better? What needs to go? Please take a look and leave some feedback. I am generally considered an excellent cook, even though I never make gourmet stuff. It usually takes me between 30 min. and 1 hour to cook a meal. A few things like dry beans may have to cook for several hours before then cooking the remainder of the meal. I am also including some info on cooking methods - pressure cooker, cast iron pans,etc... I hope you like it but I need some feedback. Thanks. http://southernfoodrecipes.blogspot.com/

Hi wlee, I haven't had the chance to give time to your cooking blog yet but will try to put some time aside. I have a special Nigella Lawson recipe for Southern fried chicken which is really good but tends to smell the house out aferwards, and I love to read of southern food such as catfish and snapper, but we don't have them here. What I am looking for at the moment though is a different way to cook rabbit rather than just in the Greek way of doing it, so let me know if there's a rabbit recipe in there - but I don't want one where I have to actually gut the thing.

Thanks for that, I made the mistake of putting a discussion up about rabbits of all things and by the end of it it made me want to cook one. They are actually bred locally for food rather than being wild but I have never yet attempted to cook one.

I can't say as though I have ever cooked a rabbit. I have eaten rabbit but didn't care for the taste. Personally I don't like wild game except deer. There used to be a tv show back in the 90s called the Southern Sportsman with Frank White. He had some great recipes with wild game. You might try and internet search on him.

Hi jb, I always find the best way to produce a really good vegetable soup is to slowly sweat the vegetables in olive oil for about twenty minutes before adding any liquid, use the lowest heat you can get.

Take the easy vegetable soup recipe: eliminate the hamburger and when mixing all the vegetables together don't drain off the juices in the can. You may also want to adjust the spice mix to your personal taste. We eat it this way to sometimes.

I just signed up to follow your blog on blog spot. I hope you don't mind. I'm already interested in your fried corn blog. What do you use to thicken it or do you not have to? My mom use to use a bit of flour or corn starch. But of course she use to use a combo of fresh corn off the cob and cream style in the can. I guess that's why she needed to thicken it because of the cream.

You don't have to use anything to thicken it. When it's done it looks like roasted corn that you have cut off the cob. You will need toothpicks after the meal :) I also thought I might start taking some pictures and posting with the recipes.

I have just bookmarked your blog. All of the recipes that I've read already sound delicious. This coming by a person that was raised in the south but grew up more on the northern types of food since my parents were transplanted from the north. My husband, on the other hand was raised on southern food and is always asking me to attempt cooking southern style food that I just didn't have a clue as to how to cook. With the help of your blog I'll be able to make attempts at cooking some of his favorites for him.

Thanks for the encouragement. Look for new recipes this weekend. Just added one for Chocolate Gravy and Biscuits. Plan to do a spot on how to cook country ham and more. Maybe by next week I can start some pictures.
