Which is better, a bank or a credit union?

The bank I have been using for 2 years has finally made me angry enough to take a stand and find a new place to keep my money. Here is a bit of the back ground. I accidentally got overdrawn in my account the other day. Honest mistake it happens no one is perfect you know what I mean. Well I figured I would get a pay day loan to cover it and get gas in the truck and so on and so forth. Well I got the pay day loan logged into my online banking and seen a bank fee for $105! I was shocked none the less, come to find out not only did that one item I knew about get overdrawn but the bank decided to bunch two other items that at the time where covered! I know banks need money and I do know I was the one that got overdrawn, however that was only one item not 3 altogether! So I was talking with my neighbor and they suggested a credit union. I have never been a part of one,so if anyone has had experiences with a credit union can you tell me what you enjoyed about it and what makes it better than a bank? Any opinions are welcome about which is better.

I belong to a credit union but they also will charge you if you go over. But I also have my savings account to back up anything that it needs to not go over the limit. My credit union used to not charge any fees either but now they are charging $10 a month if all your accounts don`t have an average balance of $200 per month. The good thing about a credit union is when you deposit your money it`s there right then not 24ours later. And some credit unions you have to be a member of something or work at a place that has a credit union available to you. Ours is a military credit union but they are now accepting everyone. You used to have to be an ex military vet or be married to a vet or active duty. My kids got in there too because at that time because they had family there they could also have an account there. Everything is changing these days.

I see. I don't mind the overdraft fees if the overdrafts are correct. I feel my bank did things they shouldn't have and this is my reason for the change. So do you know if all Credit Unions charge a fee if your account isn't above $200 or does this differ from credit union to credit union?

Well, just like banks, they are all different. You just have to shop around until you find one you like. It`s tough now with the way the economy is. Everything is getting harder for everyone. Even credit cards. I had to close my sears account because they raised my rate to 25%! That is just insane.

I haven;t used credit cards since 2002 And I know there is no way in heck I would ever get another one. I am looking into credit unions tomorrow after I make a doctors appointment. My eye is really swollen and hurts pretty bad,so if you don't see me this is why.

Right now they are all crappy when it comes to overdraughts. Talk to your bank and see if you can get them to reverse some of those charges. That sounds so rediculous. Talk to a bank manager.

Yea I have done that, this isn't the first time the bank has totally messed me up over something. When I talk to them they just tell me to open a savings account that they can take money out of if I get overdrawn.

Awww, whats wrong with your eye? Did you get to find a new bank yet today? This discusion made me remember something that happened to me at a bank. My acount got over drawn and when I went in to ask about it, this is what they said. As you know when you make a deposit aftre 2pm most banks say it won`t go on the account until the next business day. Well I had made a deposit after I had also written a check. The check went through the computer system first so it went over draw even though the deposit went afer that. OMG!. Please. That`s on of the reasons I like credit unions. At least at mine anyway, when you make a deposit it is there right then. Certain checks they do put a hold on though. Not pay checks.

Angie, I went through 3 banks because of a similar situation. With hubby out of work for over two years our money is very tight at all times. So if my acct. is not right on and with my memory, I've ended up in your position a few times. Each one of these banks had the same process of taking transactions that had been covered and some times cleared and re-arranged them so as to charge more than 1 service charge. It's criminal. I used to work for a bank up until March 2007 and this kind of practice didn't exist then. I've heard that Credit Unions are better than banks but I couldn't tell you for sure. It's worth a try. We had a bad experience with the bank a couple of years ago, too. My husband had just started his job, and we were arranging to have his paycheck go to the bank via direct deposit. He filled out all the paperwork with his employer, and we got the confirmation that his paycheck had been deposited in the bank account. We wrote out the checks to pay the bills and buy groceries, and the next week we were told that we couldn't write a check at the grocery store. We wanted to know why and were told that our check had bounced! I knew that couldn't be the case, because we had enough money in the bank to cover our expenses. After some investigation, I found out that my husband's check had been direct deposited into the savings account instead of the checking account. There is only one number difference in the two accounts, and it had gone to the wrong one. I tried to reason with the bank and explain that it wasn't our error. I even showed them the paperwork with the correct number on the direct deposit form. It didn't make any difference, and we had to pay ALL the fees and penalties from the bounced checks, even though there was enough money in the bank!

Banks will never admit to any mistakes made by them. It really makes me mad because it feels like they are picking on the people who are already struggling. I am trying to search online now and find some reviews about banks and credit unions. I am sorry you had to go threw all that. Did you stick with the bank after that or find somewhere else to go?

Thanks Angie. I'm sorry that you had to go through this, too. We decided to stick with the bank, and fortunately we haven't had any more problems with them thus far. However, we are not overly pleased with them, either. The people at the branch that we normally go to are extremely nice and helpful. They will go out of their way to try to help if they can. It is the people at the main branch that are not very nice, but we don't have to deal with them very often.

Hi babyangie, unfortunately banks are in business for one goal only, and that is to make money. Good luck negotiating with the money-grubbing bottom feeders! If you have a savings account, you can link it to your checking account in the event of needing a transfer to eliminate overdrawing your chequing account. You only pay overdraft fees if you use it, there is no monthly fee for this service. I am not sure if your bank offers this service or not, but it would be worth looking into in the event this situation arises again. I don't know much about credit unions, but don't they have similiar policies regarding overdue accounts and fees? Our nearest credit union is quite far away so that has never been a viable option for me. It wouldn't hurt to research this a bit further though.

I am sure credit unions do have the same fees and such,I am going to try to start a savings account. My whole problem is with this bank flipping things around and charging me for 3 items when only 1 item was not accounted for. It is shady business. I am sure there are some places out there that won't do that,if I can find them that is where I plan on going.
