Do you shop at a thrift store to save money in these tough times?

I shop at thrift stores a lot these days just to make ends meet. For the uninitiated, a thrift store sells second-hand items that somebody donated. It does help save the environment, because otherwise these items, which are not damaged goods, are likely to end up in the landfill or garbage bin if nobody picks them up. There are also many true gems that you can find, if you're patient enough. Besides, don't they say one man's trash is another man's treasure? So, would you or would you rather not shop at a thrift store? Any folks out there who are embarrassed to be found shopping at a thrift store?

I shop at secondhand and vintage stores.lucky for me I get items that are cheap but really, really beautiful.I have unique finds as well as designer items.I am wearing a plaid red skirt and G2000 striped blouse I bought from a secondhand store.I also got this black Marc Jacobs skirts and D&G dress from a secondhand store few blocks away from the office.I get to save money, but it is addicting.

No, I proboly should but i don't unless its for furniture. I can't buy and wear someone elses clothes that they've worn and I don't know who they are. But i will buy furniture cuz it ussauly has a few scratches that can be fixed and their cheaper than buying a retail furniture store. A whole lot cheaper.

i agree there's loads of treasure's there at times, never know what you may find that is brand new even. mum's found me jeans in there, along with other things. and i get books from there never know what you may come across, my current on is a historical romance and murder. i picked up a riding jacket there one time, it was a really good brand and all. still got it and wold wear it if i fit it. i also give my old clothes and those which do't fit me anymore to the thrift shops.

I am not embarrassed to shop the thrift store. I have an aunt that makes faces at me if she asks where my grand daughter's play outfit came from and I tell her we bought it at the thrift store for 99 cents. The same outfit may still be found at the department that my aunt shops and she saw it there. She tells me that I should not tell people where I bought it because people will that I am nasty and sorry. I tell her that it is my business and I had rather pay 99 cents for it than forty dollars for my grand daughter to play in. We go round and round about the thrift store. Happy Mylotting

I am not embarrassed to be seen in a thrift store. I love the Thrift Store. I been going to those stores before the hard times. They have interesting things there that you cant find in stores. To me it is like going to a garage or yard sale small flea market in a way. And yes I go to those also. There fun to go to. I live by four or five thrift stores. That's not including the ones that are more then a few miles away maybe 6 or 8 miles.

As a matter of fact, I was just out yesterday at thrift stores. I love to go to them. I have noticed that our Goodwill store has gone up in their prices. We have a lot of thrift stores here. I won`t buy underwear there lol. Yesterday I got a great deal on huge towels. $2 a piece. They sell new for like $6. We needed towels bad.

I love thrift stores, you can find some amazing items at thrift stores. I have gotten some outfits that look like they cost alot of money for just a few pennies. I am not ashamed for people to see me or know I shop at thrift stores, when they ask where I got something I proudly tell them at a thrift store and how much I saved.

I love thrift stores. They really are like treasure hunting, not just because sometimes you can find something valuable but because as you say, one man's trash is another's treasure! I love to find books to read for cheap and toys for the kids plus clothes. All our kids clothes come from thrift stores and they look quite well-dressed I think. They get to wear clothes that we could never afford brand new prices on.

I've been at several thrift stores here where I currently live and I must say, I'm quite surprised at how much the items in the thrift stores actually cost. They're more expensive in many cases than just going to the store and buying the items new from them.

I definitely go to thrift stores to get clothing for my family and I. I have been doing it every since my now 14 years old daughter was born. It seemed silly to pay full price for clothing that didn't last long and was in still excellent condition at a thrift store. The it just grew where most of the clothing I have has been either given to my family or gotten at a thrift store. On the rare occasion when I can't find it there I will splurge of something at Walmart. Oh and back to school we all get a new outfit.

I always shop in thrift stores when I can. We make special trips to Goodwills or to find them when we go to other towns. We call it the GW Boutique. The kids realized real quick they could actually get name brand items if they just searched hard enough. We also donate what we no longer want back to Goodwill. It helps the community.

yes. i shopped in thrift store. you just have to be patient and keen in choosing the right clothes or bag. not all items are second hand. i was able to buy a brand new hush puppies sandals and slip ons and a pair of aeropastale jogging pants. i also have some second hand blouse collections. i soak them first and wash them in hot water. you will really save money from this store! i am not embarrassed. i am even proud and announced it with my friends that what i am wearing is from a thrift store.

I have no problem shopping in thrift stores - I worked in one for a while and I saw that a lot of good clothes, even new stuff, come in if you have the patience to go through the racks and look. I also buy books quite a lot, and have bought a couple of bits of furniture. I would NEVER buy sheets or bedding as I saw what came in in donations working there and that put me off. People are disgusting! I don't really go to the local store I worked in as it was a pretty unpleasant experience, the store itself was ok, but I got sick of being treated like scum. However I have just been 'home' to England for a couple of weeks and we did a tour of the local charity shops and got lots of books and a few DVDs.

I do love shopping at thrift stores! Why would I be embarrassed at being caught shopping at one? It's not like I'm doing something disgusting or anything (like stealing). My mom likes tagging me along when she goes to these shops as I have more patience. Yep, another man's trash may be another man's treasure :) There are great deals in thrift stores, if you really know where and what to look for. I've bought a lot of things that can match up to pricey clothes, all at a lesser expense. Look-for-less! :)I also get to see a lot of branded clothes too, some are slightly damaged, but can easily be remedied :)

I definitely shop at thrift stores for the same reasons that you have mentioned. Another reason I shop these stores is the pricing as well as negotiating price for an item that is being sold. I see no reason why one should pay Retail prices for an item that if you search carefully, you would find the better item. Some wealthy people shop high end thrift stores to save money, as well a donate their goods for a great tax writeoff. TO THE VICTOR GOES THE SPOILS!!!

i shop at thrift stores all the time. i have a few favourites that have fairly cheap prices. what you are saying is not necessarily true though. i have found brand new items (tag still on) and antiques which i paid very little money (and have resold for more!)

I'm a proud thrift store shopper!!! Even with money (that's very rare, lol), I prefer to shop at thrift stores. I have a kind of aversion for the regular mall. I don't like the idea of buying something that a hundred others will also probably buy (although apparently I don't mind buying something that a hundred others probably bought 10 yrs ago, lol). I just find thrift shopping more of a thrill too, I guess. :)

funny you should mention this as we went to 3 thrift shops yesterday and I got a few pairs of sweat pants to replace the ones I made into shorts this summer. My husband works in construction and gets his pants from thrift stores, the money goes to charitys (since we mainly go to Salvation Army) and his clothes gets ruined so easily working with tools and drywall, mudding, etc.... so it is better for us to pay a portion of the price for him to work in those clothes and keeps his better clothes for the weekends. Happy mylotting!!

I shop at thrift stores quite often. i really enjoy them. I have found a lot of great bargains on my journeys there! With the economy today, we have to do what we can. There are probably people out there who are embarrassed to shop at thrift stores, but i am not one of them.

I have always shopped at thrift stores, through the good times and the bad times. You have to be willing to look through a lot of stuff, but I rarely ever come out empty handed. I am always amazed at the new and almost new condition of many of the treasures I have found over the years. I would never be embarrassed to be seen in a thrift store, there is nothing wrong with being frugal. I would be more apt to be embarrassed by paying over-inflated retail prices when so many others are struggling or doing without.
