Donating an old computer

I want to donate a computer I no longer use (it's not all THAT old), but I don't want to donate all the personal information on its hard drive. I'm not very tech-savvy, so could someone please tell me how to erase it all, in terms I can handle. Thank you.

Formatting is the only way you can 100% erase everything.

The only way to get everything off of your computer is to reformat the hard drive. If you don't know how to do this you can most likely find the information online. There are "scrubbers" available, software that claims to clean everything off of your computer, but I don't trust them. Take it down to it's most basic state and you know your information is gone.
