Copy and Paste.

India
September 28, 2009 1:43am CST
Hi there friends, today, I received a response to a discussion, which I have started yesterday. This particular member informs me that his Mylot membership has been suspended because, he had used the copy and paste, which is against the terms of services. Is that right, because I was under the impression, that we can copy and paste, once we cross 500 posts. I have also seen many members discussing about the copy and paste, which they have sent. Can some of you clear my doubts.

The only thing in the guidelines I found is that we are not to post copyrighted articles. We are not allowed to go to cnn.com, for example, and copy and paste directly into the discussion. I copy and paste links to other sites all the time, including when I want to refer to a previous discussion here on mylot. Also when I am doing a longer work that takes several days, I will save it as a text document, and copy and paste from that.

No plagiarism, so you aren't allowed to copy other people's discussions either.

When a user reaches 500 then they are allowed to copy/paste BUT they cannot copy the work of others and paste it here as their own - that is PLAGIARISM. The copy/paste feature can be used in many ways. For example you can type your posts onto Word and then paste them into the discussions. You can copy a link and paste it into the discussion if it is relevant. You CANNOT copy something from another website and post it here pretending that it is yours. You cannot copy a news article. You should leave a link to it. You cannot copy a response and paste it onto several discussions, even if it is your own response. You cannot copy/paste anything which is not written by you unless you leave a link informing where you copied it from (source) We do not get the privilege of copy/paste until 500 so that we can learn how it can be used correctly. If we abuse the use of it then we must pay the consequences. If myLot find you abusing the copy/paste feature then you lose your account. If you copy the work of others (plagiarism) that is an offence.

Thanks for the response mysdianait. It seems it is better to just type in your own words instead of copy and paste some things, which might be against TOS. I usually do not copy and paste for the simple reason, I do not know how to do it.. I always take the help of my teen age son to help me with this. If he is in a good mood, he will help me, other wise, he will say that he is busy. Even though he has shown me a number of times on how to copy and paste, some how, I am not able to master it. I am able to copy and paste in other places, but copying and pasting from some email to mylot, is still a no no for me.

Unless it is used correctly it can be more trouble than it is worth Carry on the way you are doing without using it and you will not have any problems with it

Well, MyLot does allow one to copy and paste while starting a discussion or replying to one. After one reaches or crosses 500 posts limit, MyLot allows the user to copy paste their replies and topics. But this freedom gets misused by many, here on MyLot. Users start copying other people's topics and start posting them as their own. They even paste copied replies from other users. These things generally get reported to MyLot and then suitable action is taken against the users. Copy pasting topics or replies here on mylot, which aren't originally your own, is an offense and so MyLot suspends such accounts. I Hope that answers your question. Take Care Happy MyLoting

I think you have given one of the sensible response, "users start copying other peoples topics and start posting them as their own".These things generally happen. I have seen one of my discussion being copied. I usually do not report anyone. I usually do this Mylotting for fun and information. But some members take this very seriously, and report such kind of things to the administrators. Well I do not blame them. Some people cannot tolerate cheating. Thanks for the response.Happy Mylotting.

He was right! MyLot does not allow users to copy contents from other places and post them here with their names. If anyone wishes to give some information available at some other website, one is allowed to share the link. But copying the contents may result in termination of account if detected. The copy-paste facility has been restricted till 500 posts probably to get the users into habit of writing their own contents, and I am sure it works really fine!

Thats the spirit. And not only at MyLot, we should vow not to claim credit for someone else's work anywhere . Good Luck!

actually you can copy anf paste information here though you also have to support it with your own explanation. you dont just copy and paste the whole post without sharing your own ideas about the topic. besides its easy to know who uses copy and paste specially those answer whose almost like an article long.

With all the rules and regulation, it is always better to just type in your responses rather than copy and paste some thing which are not covered in TOS.

You MUST also add a link to the source or you will lose your posts (and your account if it is repeated).

Yes, a member cannot use the 'copy and paste' facility because he has not reach the required 500 postings. How he got suspended is strange to me because a warning is normally given out if you do. How long is his account or membership suspended. Is it just hearsay? Anyway, the penalty cannot be that great.

This is news to me, that a warning is normally given. It is not hearsay, but it was a member who responded to my discussion who informed me about the suspension. The member informs, me that his account is still kept in suspension, and he has started a new account and has started responding.

u can copy ...but when you copy you have to have your own words also and then u can add....some of the words which you have read somwwhere....and also you have to mention the link etc where you found it...claiming someone other's matter as your own..is wrong...so sharing is ok..but showing someone other's work as our own is not allowed..

Hmmm, I think, I am able to understand. As long as you do not claim credit for the copy and paste matter, and add a few more words, it is o.k. Thanks for the response.

hi. copy/paste feature is available for members who have already posted 500 and above. these or we, can already paste our post directly to the response/comment box, that makes it easier and faster to post. but it doesn't mean that we can paste anything we want to post. posting copyrighted materials or articles is a violation of the mylot guidelines. spamming is also one violation that will mean a suspension or deletion of our account.

I guess with 'copy and paste' the member meant the content of the discussion that they posted. Indeed, you are not allowed to do that here, but you are free to share links if you wanted to cite a particular post that you found on the internet. Yes, you can copy & paste when you have reached 500 posts here, which is totally fine and is allowed within the rules. the content is the main issue here, not the actual act of copy and pasting. hope that was clear

It was not a friend of mine who was suspended, but it was informed by a responder that his account was suspended because of copy and paste. I am quite happy that this post has its own uses for the new members. Thanks for the response.
