Rabbits, little furry things with large ears, what are they do you? The family pet, a nice winter stew, a disease carrying pest (myxomotosis in Australia), a horror scene from a famous film, a cartoon character, a chocolate delight, a girl in a costume? What are bunnies to you. This lighthearted discussion was of course inspired by our favourite blue rabbit who I can't name in fear of deletion.

It's a good thing you mentioned more meanings of the word, because I would have resumed to speaking about the rabbits as domestic animals. I had rabbits when I was little... That was a small child's stupid ambition, as I wasn't capable of taking care of them, I just WANTED rabbits... I don't even remember how rabbit stew tastes like (I don't like eating many types of meat, I stick to the usual pork-chicken-beef-fish circle... I don't like lamb, pigeon or rabbit). The rabbits were lucky my mother fed them, or they would have starved. I thanked you for mentioning other meanings, because I wouldn't have mentioned my appreciation for Bugs Bunny or for the girls in (or out of) a long-year costume...

Oh, I'm pretty fussy about meat too... Although I also eat geese or turkey, I don't particularly like beef, and I am totally against eating sheep or goat meat... As of the cute bunnies... I did mention them... I referred to the cute bunnies hopping around in Hugh Heffner's mansion. There's a marvellous scene in Hot Shots 2 involving Tukut Chinchilla (Fluffy Bunny-Feet) Unfortunately I can't find that scene on YouTube any more (except from a version dubbed in Italian...)

Aaaahh, what the heck! Here goes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2RfKtcp5Ko The original English lines are: "Topper Harley?" "Maybe once... Now they call me Tukut Chinchilla" "What does it mean?" "Fluffy bunny-feet"

Hi stvasile, when I saw your name here I knew I wasn't going to have to suffer hearing about cute bunnies for a change. I note you aren't as fussy about your meat as you are with your herbs. I would never taste pigeon either as it would be just the same as eating a flying rat and I've yet to be that desperate, if I ever become so I'll opt for the grasshoppers or bugs instead. Since I started this discussion though I have a yen for rabbit, probably in protest at all these cute bunnies everywhere. At least you have been spared a visit from the blue rabbit, she only drops in on the ones who mention said cute bunnies.

as far as i am concerned rabbits are limited to stories, cartoons and of-course the zoo. my favorite is the one with the catch-line 'what's up Doc..?'. there is also a bunny for the grown ups...and i guess it is hugely popular

Hi sunny, what on earth kind of zoo have you been visting that has rabbits on display? I have a fondness too for the tale of Peter Rabbit whose father was put in a pie by Mr McGregor. When I added the bunny for adult bit I'd completely forgotten about the Hugh Heffner connection, I was thinking about a local place which repudately had a bunny girl several decades ago, and I know which local woman in her 50's it was meant to be, but am now convinced it was just malicious gossip. Must say I feel a bit let down by the blue bunny on here, it's not everyday one gets a discussion dedicated to oneself.

To me there's a bunny and there's a rabbit..... A bunny is fluffy, floppy eared and cute. A rabbit is tasty and damn good eating! Then there's the Easter Bunny which manages to create the best of both worlds. Cute and endearing, yet full of chocolaty, delicious goodness! The only bunny that struck fear in my very soul was the one in Monthy Python and the Holy Grail. That dude was FIERCE!

Hi James, now why did I completely not expect that answer from an Australian, is the plague of plague ridden rabbits there now a thing of the past? I wouldn't want to eat an Australian rabbit, not that I've ever eaten one yet but I know the day will come when someone puts it on my plate and swears blind it's a piece of chicken. Our Easter bunnies are made of wax and stuck on candles, not choclolaty in the least. I admit in great shame I only saw the crowd scene in MP so have no idea what fierce bunny you refer to.

Hi thea,Bunnies are in my yard every summer,I have held two over the years. They are so sweet and soft, but never would I eat them. My gram used to make rabbit stew and pie. Yuck ,reminds me of deer! I don't like the fact that people put them in cages for their own pleasures either. We have this cat that comes in our yard and gets them most of the time,I don't how much longer that ally cat will last

Bunny - Guess its obvious why we love them.
No bunnies in Greece? How sad not to be able to walk through the park and watch them.I like feeding the ducks too... As for the cats, kittens are cute but cats that are left unattended by their owners! Should face fines such as the leash law with dogs.I cannot imagine a cat jumping in my car,It would have hurting that is for sure. I have no regard for the cats left to roam the streets,Now if it would be my nieces pet.I guess it would be a bit easier to warm up to it a bit, only for her sake mind you. This is what my bunnies look like in the yard, easy to see how tiny and helpless they would be to a trash picking cat.

Hi Capsi, ok I was not a bunny lover - until I saw your pic, that is so cute, I could even pick it up which is rare with me and animals. We do have rabbits here but never seen a wild one, just ones that are being bred for food I'm afraid. Or maybe wild ones get picked off by snakes and cats. There are wild cats near the house at the moment and I don't want them here as they've been in the bins, but one of the neighbours has been out to their holiday home and feeding the things which I think is the height of stupidity when they leave again after a week, either take the things on full time or leave them to fend for themselves, not half tame them then clear off back to the UK leaving the cats to expect food from here. A reasonable annoyance I think at people not thinking their actions through.

Hi Capsi, I had no clue that cats went after bunnies, I thought that bunnies were generally bigger. I'm not to keen on cats as wild ones are everywhere out here and like to rummage through the communal dustbins so I treat them with suspicion, even had one steal a fish by jumping through my car window one day, so I shall support your bunnies rather than the vicious cat. I've never seen a wild rabbit over here actually though there were many in the uk, and English people do tend to keep them in hutches, their posh name for a cage. I haven't eaten a rabbit, but I'm like you with the deer. Although I eat meat there are some things I couldn't eat, like ducks which I feed, and deer. Totally hypocrisy really as little lambeys are so cute but make the best chops.

Rabbits - Rabbits are good to have as pets.
Rabbits like their cousins, cats, are good to own as pets but not for the pot. Their fur is prized for its softness, and even today Angora rabbits are raised for their long soft fur, which is often spun into yarn. Other breeds are raised for the fur industry, particularly the Rex, which has a smooth velvet like coat. and comes in a wide variety of colors and sizes.

Hi Zandi, I'm afraid that round here they are in fact bred for the pot, and I've been dreading someone giving me one for years in case they expect me to cook it. I thought breeding animals for fur was a no no these days. Years back at university I remember picking up this rabbit skin fur coat in a second hand place and adored it, it was so warm especially on those cold winter mornings. I don't know what happened to it at all, but I know that the red paint brigade made the wearing of anything like that a definite no.

Hi scarlet_woman, no nice to hear something negative about a rabbit for a change, even though you did start off with the word 'cute'. Doesn't anyone have a good recipe for them, we have a global world of rabbit lovers out there. I didn't know that one had to give baths to rabbits, how on earth do all those wild ones manage without daily abolutions? Anyway I'm sure the neighbours one on a shredding mission gave some amusemtent to the slobs

A horror movie? Okay which one is that? I can't think of a horror movie with a bunny in it! lol! Is it an American film, or greek, english, Australian? Canadian? Um... They are a pet... My grandmother once dug up bunnies from her garden, she almost killed them diggin them up as she was digging and didn't intentionally almost kill them. My aunt got them as she had other bunnies. I once lived with friends and we had a pet bunny, a friend brought it as it was her pet.

Hi SomeCowGirl, I was talking about the bunny boiling scene in Fatal Attraction.but I'm sure you knew that. Your aunt should have wielded her spade with more strength and done a proper job. All pets should be banned. Do you remember the heading here, interested in or not interested in, my only interest in the little creatures now is one involving a good recipe and the blue rabbit has once again renaged on the plot to come in an hop.

Hi Aunty, so for you they were both sweet little things and things that went in the pot. Did your ex do the nasty bits of gutting and skinning for you or leave that bit to you? I have trouble gutting a fish properly and dread the day someone gifts me a rabbit and expects me to know what to do with it, whereas a ready prepared fillet of rabbit I imagine would be enhanced with some juniper berries and rosemary.

Hi Karen, no idea why the blue rabbit hasn't popped in to say hello, she's remiss in her duties of hopping into boxes of people who don't eat them. She's the rabbit lover. Please kitty my dear, we don't have those kinds of things in Greece you know, this isn't New York, we have Greek men. That's if you're alluding to what I think you are, we do have Carrie and the City (skillfully avoids mature content tag there). My son watches Bugs Bunny in Greek which is apparently as funny as it is in American, and the bad habit of Easter chocolate bunnies is only just beginning, personally I prefer the old tradition of a nice bit of candle to chew on, much better for the teeth.

I think rabbits are such cute animas. I know that some people only assoiate them with Easter. My younger sister had a pet rabbit. Her name was Patches. It was fun to watch her activities. Whenenver I watch Fatal Attraction it's hard to watch the bunny in the pot. It's so cruel.

Hi sender, well the blue rabbit thingy would be much better than me at getting all excited about your cuties but as she appears to have gone awol I will empathise as much as I am able and I'm sure that Patches was indeed very cute and fun. Now it most probably wasn't a real bunny in the pot in the film but a stunt bunny but if you are having issues then best to turn away when you know that scenes coming. Hi carolscash, that sounds quite unusual to raise rabbits to sell as pets, but I suppose if there's a demand for them it would make sense. Greeks aren't really into pets, in fact they really don't go in for them much at all, and here if someone was raising rabbits it would be for food but I only know of one local woman who does that actively now. I've never eaten it myself but have seen tourists order it which they probably never would do back at home/

Hello my friend Thea. I really like rabbits and think they are adorable little animals. When I was a teenager I bought a sandy and white colored rabbit called Sally and my sister bought a black lop rabbit called Tiggy. They were both meant to be female but Tiggy was indeed a male. The result was seven little bunnies. Four of them were sandy colored, two of them were sandy and white colored and one of them was black with blond highlights. One time Sally dug out of our garden and she went missing for three days.
