would you prefer to have a beautiful house and an ugly car... or vice versa??

This discussion is just for fun, it was a question that I came across and it started a whole conversation between my hubby and me and thought how fun would it be to bring it here and see what others said compared to what hubby and I said... My hubby said he would prefer the beautiful car, because that goes with you every where...me being the practical said I would prefer the beautiful house because you actually gain equity with a house and for resale value...the car depreciates the minute you drive it off the lot.... so.... what would you prefer a beautiful house and ugly car....or a beautiful car and ugly house??

i'd definetely choose the beautiful house, the car gets depreciated with time, or could be stolen, the house seems to be a more permanent thing, and anyway i can live without a car but not without a house so even if i have to choose wheter to improve the first or the second, i still have the same priorities.

thank you!! that is exactly what I said... the car can be stolen, or break down on you... a house may need work but the work you put into it will only raise the value of it... not be wasted on the car!! thanks for the response and have a great day!

Yap, i would rather have a beautiful house and pat with an ugly car. Reasons being, a car can be a greatest liability on your side due to mechanical break downs, prone to accidents easily, i said easily and servicing whereas a house could give you freedom. As a human being we all need shelter, some times for prestige the most luxurious one like the one i had in Hawaii. Beautiful homes, beautiful living.

Of course I choose beautiful house, ugly car. Just like we usually buy house first, and buy car only when we have extra money. House is home, it is a place we live in, comfortable is very important. While for a car, we only drive it while in need, and we can choose to use other vehicle if we do not like it. Thanks and have a nice day.

I agree the house is your home and you want to be more proud of that and want to show that off vs a vehicle. thanks for the response and have a great day!!

I would take the beautiful house and the ugly car too. My reasoning is a little different thou (although you are correct about the equity of the two! lol For me I think of it as, you are in your home more then your vehicle. You can entertain in your home and not so much in a vehicle. Yep give me the beautiful house and ugly vehicle!

exactly, you invite people over to your home...not your vehicle, so for me I have to have a nice place to live not to drive. thanks for the response and have a great day!!

I want a beautiful house AND a beautiful car!! lol but if i have to choose just one then definately the house.... A car you get in drive from point a to point b and get out....you spend all of your time in your house so i would want my house to be nice!

in a perfect world we could choose both, but for this it is either one or the other!! I agree, the house is what is home... you have to be proud of where you live and you can buy a fixer upper house and turn it into a beautiful home... and that is what is important to me!! thanks for the response and have a great day!!

I agree with your take on it, definitely the beautiful house and the ugly car! I spend a lot more time in my house than my car and it gains value while the car does the opposite. Being comfortable in my home is way more important than being stylish on the road.

I would definitely rather have a beautiful house than a car. I spend about 8 hours sleeping in my room. That is definitely more time than I spend in my car. And like you said, a car depreciates in value while a house's value rises.

hello bookreadermom08, i believe that most men if not all will prefer to have a beautiful car for that is what they like and enjoy. and that most women if not all will prefer to have a beautiful house for they can decorate on it.

Hi Dear really intresting discussion to be honest, i agree with u i would like to have Beautiful house and Ugly car. as house is place where u spend most of ur time, if u have nice house its comfortable and relaxing and u enjoy ur time here. Cost is seperate issue that it increases with passage of time, but i prefer it as its peace of mind. Take care

I have to say, I'd much rather have a beautiful home and an ugly car than the other way around. I have seen homes where you would think no one could ever live in them from the outside, but the car was the nicest car you could imagine. I always find myself thinking "why didn't they spend that on the house?" Now that I have my own house, I can see why it is much easier to spend on a car than a house. Usually the house takes a lot of work. I'm not afraid of hard work, but I'm not so handy. What would be ideal for me was if I had both. LOL

oh both would be a dream come true for sure... but my hubby has traveled for his work and he has said how many times you go to a broken down house and they have a big SUV or expensive car in the drive way!! yes, houses definitly cost alot of money to put into them but you get that money back out... a car you dont!! but maybe having a not so ugly car would be nice too!! thanks for the response and have a great day!

I would also say beautiful house, ugly car. Mostly because I wouldn't care what the shape of the car is as long as it's drivable. I would even prefer a forever ugly house if I was guaranteed a forever working car ....even a piece of crap one.

This is a pretty tough question to answer. However, I guess I would prefer the beautiful house and the ugly car, myself. I would be embarassed either way but I think I would be more embarassed to have an ugly house and a beautiful car. If people were to come to see me, I wouldn't want to be embarassed about the shape my house is in. If I were to sell this house, a person would more likely buy it than they would an ugly house. I guess it really is a tough question, as that is the reason why I posted it...my hubby is all for the ugly house and beautiful car .... me of course I want the beautiful house... and by talking about it here everyone makes such great points!! Yes, the house is going to get you more money in the long run and the car will only cost you money...so for me the house is the better choice!! thanks for the response and have a great day!!

No competition here, brm, the house would win with me hands down. Maybe it is a "nesting" thing, I don't know, but a house would probably be yours for a very long time after the car has come and gone. The equity point also appeals to be frugal side, so that is another good point you make. Besides, every night I could hide my ugly car in my beautiful garage - lol

28 Sep 09
thats right!!!! a beautiful garage will hide the ugly car!!! yeah, a car will depreciate and you are never going to get your money out of it.. so why does that have to be beautiful...but the house is a resale/investment... so that should be the beautiful one!!! thanks for the response and have a great day!

Well, I don't drive so I will go for the beautiful house! I think that everyone would love to have the home of their dreams! Once you have achieved that then you would truly feel fulfilled I think! I'm not sure that I will ever achieve that though! I'm just getting started with my life in terms of career planning and training and I'm 34 years of age. I have to win the lottery or something like that in order to pay for a beautiful home in cash. I do have the intention of eventually learning how to drive and so at that point I would love to have a car that I can grow to love, a porshe or something like that but boy do I need a tremendous amount of salary in order to realise this dream. There are so many obstacles and not enough doors opening! Andrew

As long as you have dreams and goals you are already one step farther than most!!!! funny you mention a porshe --my hubby said that exact car this morning as he is still talking about this question (which is why I had to bring it up here --it really does make you think...lol) You never know what tomorrow will bring so keep reaching for your dreams!!! thanks for the response and have a great day!!

I would definately choose a beautiful house. A house is somewhere you live every day and night. You make anything in your house, cleaning, washing, living, eating, cooking, sleeping etc. I pass most of the time in a house not a car. On the other hand as long as I have a car with four wheels in good state, i dont care if its beautiful or not I just need a good car but obviously I prefer the beautiful home!!

bookreadermom, From what I know, men will generally prefer to have cool cars to show off and we ladies will definitely wish for a beautiful house. I wish to have a house I can make a home. A beautiful one that means "home sweet home" so that my man can say "home is where his heart is"

Given only two option, I would prefer a beautiful house. It is good to look at and so much better to live in one. As for a car, as you rightly say, it depreciates and need a lot of upkeep and maintenance. But given a choice, many men would prefer beautiful wives to be in their beautiful cars and to live with them in their beautiful houses!

I would prefer the beautiful house. Your hubby is right, he is able to bring with him the car anywhere however the car needs maintenance after a few months or years and its value depreciate as time passes by. while the house does not. you may not able to bring with you the house yet you have a permanent structure where you can start your life without renting. Renting a house is so expensive. Take this as an advice "Save your money". The land depreciates but never the house itself.

You are soooooo right!! I agree, I use to be able to save but times have got real tight and we have lost all our savings, but we keep a positive attitude and the fact that one day we will be back on top again!! A house is so important... a value, a home, a place that you can call your own!! and that is why I choose a house.. the car will always be a luxury and as long as it drives that is ok with me!! thanks for the response and have a great day!!
