Do you tend to be selective in giving donations?

Typhoon ondoy has just ravaged Manila and this is one occasion where the goodness of the human heart becomes evident. People from all walks of life are out to give to help alleviate the sufferings and needs of their fellow men.
Do you choose which reputable organization to give in order for you to be sure that what you give will surely reach the people in need? Is it possible that some other people will take advantage of this too?

I am bombarded with phone calls and mail asking for donations and yes, I carefully choose which organizations I donate to. I always donate to St. Jude Children's Hospital and have for over thirty years because it is for helping children regardless if the parents have enough money or insurance. No child should ever lose out on a possible cure or help of any kind just because of being poor.
When I receive calls for donations to police or fire stations, I donate to the ones that are local to my city. And I usually donate clothing, furniture, etc to organizations that help veterans and families of veterans.
