Does the light go off when you shut the refrigerator door?

Rather than dwell on something serious,I am being silly. Did you ever think that the little bulb in the back of the refrigerator really turns off when you shut the door? You know you can never catch it off no matter how quickly you open the door. Is the little button there to just make us believe that it does?
