Is the state too involved in parenting issues...

I was watching the news that a woman in Michigan is being told by the State Department she cant watch her friends children an hour each day before school because she doesnt have a license for day care. WHAT? Are you serious? According to the department of social services someone in the neighborhood complained that she was running an unlicensed daycare. All this woman is doing is watching her friends children for an hour in the a.m. so they dont have to wait for the bus alone for a period of time. Dont neighbors have anything better to do? WHat was the problem? She didnt offer to watch their kids? I have helped my friends many times. I think this is exactly what happens when people butt into other peoples lives for no reason other than they have nothing better to do. If one of those children get hurt or kidnapped because they are left alone for an hour each morning the state would be blaming the parent for neglect. Now they make responsible arrangements and still their being punished. DO you agree with this?

This issue has been a major deal on all the talk shows and news. No I do NOT agree. I think it is a crock. What is our society coming to when a friendly neighbor is only being kind to be accused of breaking the law. I think is is a damned shame.

I still cant believe that all the neglected and abused children's cases have been put on hold so they can harass a woman who is nice enough to watch her friend's children, for free, so that they wont be left alone each morning while the parents are at work. What a monster that woman is!! NOT!!! R U serious? Michigans child welfare organization is a joke. You can abuse em but you cant watch them for free. ABSOLUTELY ABSURD!!!dl

No I think the mom that needs this other woman to watch kids cause she has to go to work at that time should be allowed too. How is it a day care when its only an hour. I just HATE busybodies!

That's exactly how I feel! What gets me is that there are so many more serious issues involving children that need to be addressed. So many children are in danger and here they are worrying about a woman who is keeping other people's children out of danger and she is being punished. Where is the justice?

It's alarming. I know people will have all kind of excuses for this, but it is ridiculous. The government is too involved in everything these days.

Well said Ambie! I think that the department of child welfare should be embarassed. All the other crazy stuff going on in the world involving children and they pick this to enforce. And whomever called on her, Has way too much time on their hands and is a big as* Troublemaker. dl

I would say that I was not paying her anymoney she was a friend doing a good turn, don't these nosy people do favours for their friends or do they have anyfriends. In England they are bringing out a new law that says if you run some kids around after school or help out on a saturday morning with the football you must be checked out.Even if it is your neibours or your friends kids.I can look after my grandchildren or my close friends kids while they go shopping or out for the evening. They are making it impossible for people to volunteer ,we had a terrible case of a caretaker doing kids in about two years ago, because of that we all have to suffer.I am talking about parents really wanting to support the school and their kids friends, yes the government do interfere to much.A friend helping a friend out should be ok,I would have really been stuck in the past if my friends had not helped me out,and I have certainly been called at short notice to have friends kids ,someone in the family has been rushed to hospital ect or just want to go christmas shopping with out the kids.So is the government going to send someone to watch those kids then.It has got ridiculous ,I feel so sorry for that poor woman and her kids.

Well put my friend! I am with you all the way! Government has found a way to interfere in our family unit. I thought there was a fine line that wasnt to be crossed by state. I was mistaken. Not only do they interfere in our finances now they interfere in our parenting decisions as well. What's next? Planning our meals? I wouldnt put it past them. dl

It sounds to me like people need to worry about their own lives. At the same time, it just sounds like we are hearing her side of the story. If she was just babysitting for an hour or so in the morning, then she shouldn't have any problems. But it sounds like someone actually had some kind of proof against her. Even so, as long as the kids are safe and happy, I don't see why the state should step in. The only thing I can think of is the child-to-adult ratio. I know that here in Virginia, you are allowed to babysit only so many kids at a time before you have to apply for a daycare license. I really can't say this is true in this particular situation because I haven't seen the newscast. Anyway, now that I am finished rambling, I agree with you. People should butt out, even though I can kind of understand it if the kids were causing problems in the neighborhood such as vandalism. But I don't think that is the case here.

It does sound like some neighbors have too much time on their hands. I must tell you though that it wasnt just her side they reported on. They also had the state representative, the department of child welfare, and three neighbors, two of which had their children being watched by the woman. It wasnt a situation where a woman is just venting. I imagined myself in their situation. What the big deal is I have no Idea. There are only 3 children involved. One of which is the woman who is babysitting so it clearly isnt a case of too many children. I feel that the state is interfering on a parents choice of whom they decide will watch their children. Thanks for responding and Happy MyLotting. dl

I read the news story last night. Now that I know a little more about the case, I think that people need to mind their own business!! This woman wasn't even doing what I would consider to be babysitting. I am so glad that I don't live in that state. At least here, I can leave my children with someone I trust and not have to worry about if they have a license or if they are going to be keeping more kids than mine. I have four kids, 12, 8, 20 months, and 6 months. They are enough for anyone to keep. I have a babysitter that has been with me since my oldest was born. I just don't trust anyone else to watch them. We have to be so careful who we leave our babies with. I think that the state needs to reword their law. I don't think that babysitters should have to go through what a daycare does, like paying taxes. I mean, they don't charge near the money that a daycare does, and my babysitter doesn't make me bring the kids' food with them. She gives them food out of her own refrigerator. I know how expensive that is for her. My kids can eat. I like the way it works here in Virginia. The only time you have to have a daycare license is if you 1)make so much money per year and 2)have a certain number of kids that you take care of on a regular basis.

Another nail in the coffin of Liberty, thanks to the nanny-staters who think it's the government's business to micromanage every aspect of our lives. What's next? If you carpool with your neighbor and take their kids to school with your own will they now say you need a livery license?

That sounds crazy. I mean why does she need to open a daycare center whe she is only watching her friend's kids for a hour. I tell you people do need to mind their own lives. If she had hurt a child I could see complaining or calling it in.I think some people have nothing better to do with their lives.

that's law now in my area too.they were claiming kids were getting abused/neglected. they won't let people sit other people's kids anymore, and yet one place they did give a licence to let a monster kid (and i do mean monster) bite other children and even ripped this other kid's eyelids off.

I agree it is ridiculous. It was very nice of the woman to help her neighbor out so her children wouldnt have to wait for the bus alone. Why should the old woman have to get a licence to babysit her neighbors kid for one hour a day. I think its just a way for the government to control our lives. If they are day care certified they have to report how much they make and get taxed on it so the government earns off the day cares. If people babysit under the table then the government cant tax them and then they miss out on getting there greedy hands on even more money. I think whoever turned these people in are pathetic as well. They should just mind there own business.

That's a dirty shame! I would be utterly po'd on if someone did this to me! The fear of some sicko hurting my kids is why I am just driving them to school until 2 of them are on the bus togeather. However I will stay at the bus stop with them as we live near a busy intersection and someone could just shove them in a car and disappear in the traffic or they could run into the road and get hurt. Sadly it takes 2minutes to get to school & they don't come to get her til like 5min before the bell rings!! She likes the time to hang out with her friends. ANd if they did door to door pick up seeing where we are located I'd be ok with it but they don't.

It sounds like to me that this woman was being neighborly and trying to help her friends. People can be so nosey, can' they? I have to deal with nosey people all the time, too, but I guess we all do. I just wish people would mind thir own business, myself. She must have been looking after a lot of kids if the person thought she was running an unlicensed day care center. Still, what business is it of theirs? Kathy.

If it was just for an hour before they went to school then I see nothing wrong with it. There were only two kids beside her one so why did the busybodies think it was a daycare. If the kids are not destorying anything in the neighborhood and are just playing until they have to go to school what is the big deal if they are at a friends house. The State Department needs to valuate when they get a report but in this case they should just let the kids stay at the friends house until they have to go to school.
