Today Newspaper headlines in Malaysia : Traffic was at a standstill as city folk returned to work and schools reopened after the week-long Hari Raya Aidilfitri festival break. The congestion lasted several hours. Have you ever experience traffic congestion where cars basically standstill or bumper to bumper? What you normally do? Listen to the radio and sing along? or read newspaper? Make phone calls? Do share your experience and views here. Thanks

Even we often get stuck in traffic in metro cities and highways here at India. Its really a very frustrating experience since it becomes really tough to keep cool. And the hot weather adds to the woes. I usually try to listen to the radio in the vehicle or talk to someone on phone. Sometimes I enjoy watching the crowd and the way people handle the jams. If I see some kid around, I find it really great watching him do his things. These are the things that I often do.

Dear Amit, Yes, India and Thailand are really 'famous' for its traffic congestion. Normally the locals will advise the tourists/visitors to plan extra hour to go to the airport due to the traffic congestion which may delayed the journey. However, if I am the passenger during the traffic jam, I normally checking the messages, or admiring the photos in my cell phone. If my son was with us, I will play with him games like 'I spy' or at times he brought along games like 'tic-tac-toe', 'five-in-a-row' and many more. We also play naming games like..name all the Cristmas songs, name all the singer, names all the movies or cartoons. We have to be creative when we are travelling long distance or caught in a traffic congestion:) Thanks for sharing, I truly enjoy reading your response

I travel alone most of the times, so don't have anyone else with me. Its so sweet that U spend the time during jams playing with your kid. Even I liked all your ideas, and will implement these once I get married and have my kids.

Sure, try to avoid this type of jam. So, when it is the long hols, just stay home and have fun with nearby family members. If you need to go back, go within the days in between. Otherwise, it is a burden and tax on petrol and patience. I think your life will become relatively shorter to have to take this kind of unnecessary punishment.

Dear gracefuldove, You are absolutely smart and wise! Nowadays, modern families prefer to go for a long holiday overseas intead of stuck at those frustrating and costly jam. I have been trying to explain this theory to my husband every Chinese New Year. I told him, it is better to visit his mum at any other days besides Chinese New Year. Visit more often is better than visit once a year and taking high risk of the traffic. Cheers and happy myLotting!

Hi there! I face traffic jams everyday and I go mad, when I am made to wait in traffic jams or longer red lights. I just cannot do anything about it. If I am driving with my better half, at least I can talk to her about one thing or the other, but if I am alone, I just keep staring at the red light and keep counting the seconds to turn it green. I feel that traffic jams raises our blood pressure and one day we will be admitted in an asylum for going made due to traffic jams.............LOL!

I am relaxing and keep relaxing on red lights. I appreciate your stand that you don't over react when caught in traffic jams and you do not get into hurry to reach the school of your son. I buy your argument that safety is primary and other things could wait. I've become accustomed to daily traffic jams and I've adopted myself to the situation. I wrote a poem also about red light and green light, you may like to see the below mentioned link: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/1846777/red_and_green_colours_.html?cat=10 Have a great day! Cheers!

Oh Noooo...relax..relax my dear. Yes, those traffic jam and red lights really make me mad too. At times it really get into my nerves especially if I am late sending my son to school. The school prefect will be waiting at the gate to jot down the names of students who came late. However..SAFETY FIRST! So, I will tell my son, if really late, no choice...let them write down your name, as long as not 3 times consecutively. Sometimes, it is really 'Murphy' Law. When we are late, there will be always road accident, or some car stucked - battery flat - to create the traffic congestion, then it seems every traffic light are always RED... Happy travelling and happy myLotting. Cheers :)

Oh Iriene.. I think in Malaysia, everyone experienced the traffic..even now I don't have to go to work, but sending my twins cousin to work, it's just no difference.. So, while I got stuck in the traffic, I got nothing much to do since I don't buy newspaper (not worth it to read all the rubbish) and all I depend on is the radio station (they better make sure they got good music and humour) or I just look left look right to observe other drivers. Nowadays, I get better coz I can still play with my baby while she is in the car.. previously, stuck in the traffic on my own is really killing me.. I sometimes just don't feel like moving any further and just parked my car in a building, and look around if I can do some shopping rather than stuck in the traffic.

Dear cwong77, Your baby is the best, at least you can play with her. Seeing her giggle and smiling, really makes all the tension go away...best remedy! Oh yes, I remembered one of the Chinese New Year when my family and I travelled back from Johore to PJ, as we entered the Seremban highway, it was a 'standstill' jam. I spontaneously asked my husband "Do you have the Seremban 2 house keys with you?" He answered "Yes, why?" Just turn in there and go to the house and relax. So all of us went to our Seremban 2 house (Just vacant as the previous tenant moved out). We take an afternnon nap and later take a shower and continue our journey back to PJ. By then, the traffic is clear and much smoother...

Dear cwong77, Early in the morning have discount on toll? Before what time? By the way, normally where do you travel to during the festival? Are you using the North-South Highway. Lately Touch&Go came up with a new card that gives discount on North South High Way and KFC at certain outlet.

Iriene, travelling during the festive seasons always 'kill' us.. these days the road systems are better, comparing to those time when roads are really limited. Now with the expansion of the roads, despite the high toll that we are paying, traffic gets slightly better. me too always get stuck in traffic during the festive, especially if we travel on the eve, so we now decided to only travel early in the morning.. since sometimes we could also enjoy discount too!

My job required me to travel alot. So I am always prepared for this type of traffic congestion. I will had my car radio on when I drive. There will be the daily newspaper at my side on the passenger seat. I will read the newspaper if the traffic congestion is standstill. At times I will make phone calls to my family or my customers. Jot down some appointment on my diary. I will normally make myself occupied or perhaps I will just listen to the music :) Cheers..

Dear James, I heard about reading the book or newspaper during the traffic jam. But it normally practice by the passengers in the car, not the driver.. You are really 'the special one'. However, do focus on your driving and always cautious. Do not too engrossed in reading the newspaper, then the car at the back will horn you

It is very diffciult to spend the time during traffic jam. I get very upset to be in a traffic jam. The traffic in my city is very busy almost all the time and especially during peak hours when people go to schools and offices and come back from schools and offices. I have waited in a traffice jam once for one and half hours. I usually listen to music at that time and keep waiting and praying for the traffice to be clear.

Hi Iriene. I've learned to carry a magazine and a puzzle book and pencil in the car for just such things as long traffic jams. The worst one I was ever in was 90 minutes, and I had to piddle soooo bad!! But no place to go and nothing to do but hold it! Ack! Karen

Dear Karen, You are well prepared with magazine, puzzle book & pencil to fill those frustrating time. I remembered when my son was much younger, we were stuck at the Summit, Subang Jaya traffic congestion. My son was playing and out of sudden, he said "Mummy, I want to 'shishi' (a baby language for peeing). That was a terrible jam on a 4 lanes main road. So, I just get a small shopping plastic bag for him to do it For guys is much convenience...but ladies..?? Thanks for sharing and happy myLotting :)

Well, I have experienced being stuck in heavy traffic a lot. What I do is just take some sleep during the ride, or sometimes, I just listen to my ipod and silently sing along with the songs. lol. I hate being stuck in traffic alone, if i'm with my boyfriend, I won't mind the traffic, cause I won't really be able to tell time, cause we'll just talk and talk. lol.

that is so true.. being stuck in traffic with a loved one, makes all the diffence in the world, and sometimes it becomes one of our more favorite experiences.. One time, my siblings and I were stuck in a 5 hour traffic jam.. we just listened to some John Mayer songs, and sang along with it, we were like crazy people inside the car, singing loudly and pretending we were in a concert. lol. those were good times.

I have a plan B when I move out. It helps me to get out of any situation in an emergency. I keep two charged batteries for my mobile phone. If I am to go for an important meeting then I leave home much early. I do my homework well with all their land line and office staff's cell numbers to contact them in case I am getting late. I get posted with the latest traffic position so that I can change my route accordingly. As I always travel by public transport, I can change the bus or cab when ever and where ever I wish and take the easily accessible route. I always prepare myself for such situations. Hope to see you again with another discussion.

Dear meapas, You are really well prepared....an amazing great planner too! I like your idea on Plan B. Contingency plan..2 batteries for your mobile phone..WOW! It happened to me once, my cellphone out of battery. I have to change some coins to make call on the public phone. If we have important appointment, it is advisable to start early to avoid the usual peak hours jam. Also this will give us some buffering in case of emergency or unforseen circumtances of sudden 'traffic congestion' Cheers and take care :) Btw, I did comment to your response yesterday night but something was wrong with Firefox, it just did not post...so I did it again today...All the best :)

Iriene88, One of the worst traffic congestions I had experienced was when I was in Mumbai where it lasted 4 hours bumper to bumper to reach my hotel. For most part, I drifted from sleep to sleep till I had the urge of nature's call. I was literally fidgeting and uncomfortable. Fortunately, the driver was sensitive enough and unfortunately I was offered the urinal bottle! Can you believe this? And my first time with such an apparatus! I wonder what if craps came calling. Diapers? Huh! I think like me you will want to find out and/or want to wait for that to happen and experience it.

Iriene88, Well, let's see if there will be enough discussions for me to respond to, to reach 2009 then. I think I would prefer to be in a traffic congestion in Bangkok, Thailand over India, as the place is much friendlier and safer. Also, I can always while away my time in a nice restaurant or shopping mall till the congestion is over. You know the shopping in Bangkok is just fantastic and not forgetting those delicious steamboats or succulent seafood.

Traffic jam, I believe, is something which is MOST HATED THING around the world. It is annoying and I try my best to avoid it every single day. But if I, unfortunately, have to face it, I just spend hours trapped inside the car listening to the music, browsing internet with laptop (only if I bring one), read newspaper or some interesting book. And above all of them, I eat snacks! =) It's a pitty because it is WE, ourselves who make traffic jam does exist.
