Writers, your opinion on ODesk

I've been writing for a few years and opened an ODesk acct recently. I took the many tests and had surprises but more prospects than the non-virtual world. My first one wanted one article written but wanted a sample (like 200 words) and then he ended the assignment and started another one that would have been 25, 400-word articles for $25. And these topics would have required research because it was an unusual subject matter. Anyway, he got kind of strange when I opted to not be part of it (my bad for not paying more attention) but found another client that is more compatible. Do any writers out there work for this company or one like it? What was your experience?

I have gotten a few gigs through Odesk over the past year I have been on there. I have found it hard to find ones even worth my time, as the pay is often such a joke for the amount of work that goes into it, but the few I have ended up with have been enjoyable.

Good luck with the gig. I am currently have a travel writing gig through odesk that has potential to be quite long term. I am really enjoying it, especially since it is a fair wage.

I'm finding this to be the case as well. I got a client who desires a long-term relationship last week and so far all looks good. Just hoping they pay on time. :)

Your experience there depends on your buyer. Odesk is merely the place where buyers and providers (you) get together. Odesk has certain rules and stipulations, and they police up to a point, but it's mainly between you and whoever hires you. Check out their rating, because that's where you'll find out how trustworthy they are. When you are hired, and do the job, you rate the buyer as to how he pays, his expectations, his responses and so forth. He also does the same to you. By checking his rating, you'll see how others who worked for him felt about his jobs. I've noticed a lot of the jobs posted there seem to be wanting blog postings. Basically, they want to pay you pennies to produce a blog they can capitalize on. Or so it seems to me. That isn't Odesk's fault. They only provide a place for buyers and providers to meet.

I just turned down another gig on oDesk. The first person wanted 25, 350-word articles for $25. Well, this new client that I thought was less shady changed their requirements from 250 to 400 words. There were also various keywords to select from but at the last minute this changed to one keyword that requires research. Foul! I will still use them to check on leads from time to time.If you already make a few cents (or $) with AC, eHow, Textbroker and whatever else works then it's a helluva lot better than losing sense dealing with flaky clients.

Hello. I have been writing artciles, stories, and reviews for a number of websites. They are wworking quite well. I don't know "ODesk". This is the first time I heard of it. So, I cannot give any comments on that. But, I will surely take a look at it, and see how it works. I will give my feed-back after I try it out. Thank you for bringing it to my attention.

Greenline, I have been doing the same but since my position was eliminated in July, I noticed the Associated Content doesn't have as many upfront pay assignments and my residuals are not what they once were so I'm always checking out new venues. There are a lot of tests and yes, they do seem to want a lot but it makes us writers more marketable.

I tried signing up for that one time. it just seemed so confusing I didn't want to persist with it. I just can't give you any feed back about it because I just really don't know what I am going to do in terms of working on it. I don't really think it is for me. I just think that someone should be able to take advantage of it though.

Snowy, Yes, they do ask a lot of ?'s and there are a bunch of tests but they separate you from the crowd when it comes to bidding on jobs. I took about two hours one weekend to just get my files together and take tests.
