yes my friends its bonfire time again! and this year it is going to be a BIG one. so i am looking for suggestions on what to chuck on the pyre. some are obvious - so far we have got:
all the harry potter books (for encourging the kiddies to indulge in devil worship)
actually all children's fantasy with the exception of narnia (has a christian subtect)
no, include narnia, it has magic, creatures from greek mythology, is well written and kiddies enjoy it (hell, we do not want to encourage reading)
all thrillers (include scenes of violence)
chaucer's canterbury tales (have you seen what filth the wife of bath comes up with, and there are digs at the clergy)
everything dickens ever wrote(evil comments on social injustice)
everything d.h.lawrence ever wrote (the sheer filth is appalling)
heart of darkness (since when has empire building ever had unpleasant consequences?)
sherlock holmes (encourages smoking and drug taking)
any more - please explain why they should be thrown on. thankyou.

I don't think that books should be burned at all, and after having read "Fahrenheit 451" by Ray Bradbury, I think that it's wrong to burn books.
Instead of burning books, why not have discussions or debates on them. We don't have to burn books.
Also, I am reading the Middle English version of the "Canterbury Tales" right now, and I love it. It's like learning a whole new language.
There is so much awe and wonder in books, but they should never be taken literally or seriously. People will take books for literal value, but people should never do that. Books were meant to be interpreted. Some people will agree on certain interpretations and many others won't, but people can discuss the content until the cows come home.

That's what I usually use those for, bonfires and "THE SHREDDER"!!! (Sorry, I have to say it in a loud dramatic voice because I love my shredder, it can shred anything, and I mean, anything.)

Hm, since I am NOT a book burner, I'd probably burn none...but if I were, some things that would go:
The horrid children's books wheres wolves eat grammas and witches eat little children like Hansel and Gretel.
I would likely burn 2/3 of the cheapy, repetitive paperbacks, in the hopes that each the was left would be something original.
LOL, my mind just went blank, so "over and out" for now.
Enjoy the pyre!@jb78000 (15139)

um, sorry for the slightly delayed response karen, must have missed your comment the first time round. the children's books you mention are very scary, which is pretty much the idea. children like getting scared. some of the grimm brother's work however is TOO grim in my opinion.

burn all bills, burn all the money of this world, burn the differences and discrimination along with them, bring the good old barter system back to life... good old days when they didn't have something small and valuable in exchange for goods. . . but who will burn money first?!

What about the popular toddelers book "pat the bunny"? I think you of all people should agree with me here, as this book blatently ignores a rabbits rights NOT to be patted, unless it so desires....(sorry..i am feeling a bit "fruity" tonight...perhaps too much vodka to celebrate me acually having a day off tomorrow...)

Bonfires? I disagree with ANY burning of books for ANY reason, and I abhor and despise the idea that anything should be censored. If I don't like something, then I just FLIPPING DON'T BUY IT OR READ IT. DUH. But that's too HARD for people. They want to also interfere with the rights of OTHER people to read a book THEY don't like. How dare they?
I suppose I could include the infamous Twilight series because it is belief in supernatural and cross-breeding, novels of any genre that deal with tough choices like... having another child in order to use the stem cells for a sick one (because that's playing God) or perhaps a child who becomes ill and then starts having visions of the future and everything they predict comes true (because that brings up the issue of psychic ability and THAT is evil)....
But honestly I would vote for tossing any people who like burning books on the pile. Thank you very much. /taking a bow.

it's wanting to control how people think. people that enjoy book burning are - fundamentalists who think they know the truth and anything that in any way goes against their viewpoint is going on the fire and very repressive regimes - e.g. former USSR - again wanting to control how people think.

Better throw Thoreau in there, you know he talks about Civil Disobedience and social responsibility!

What a lovely tongue-in-cheek discussion.
My choices would be:
--Anything written by Bill Clinton (he's a liar)
--Anything written by Hillary Clinton (she's a liar)
--Anything written by Barack Obama (see above reasons)
--Anything written by Michelle Obama (see above reasons)
--Anything written by Al Frankenstein--er...Franken (he's just a blithering idiot)
Oh, and don't forget to put in stuff written by Gertrude Stein.
