generic vs branded drugs... any preference?

I don't really buy branded drugs if the generic equivalent is available. Some of my friends disagree arguing that generic ones are less potent. From what I hear, they are not really different and if ever there is, it maybe absolutely very minimal. There is a great difference in prices especially the common OTC ones for headaches, colds and common sicknesses. how about you?
