raining cats and dogs...

there is a typhoon today and it is raining really hard outside. the trees and swaying furiously and the sky is really dark. i am just wondering, when it is raining very hard, why do they say that it is raining cats and dogs?

hello! there are stories behind that... The first originate in medieval times when animals are all kept under a barn. Whenever it rains hard, the cats and dogs jump out of the barn as if they are falling from the sky. The second story is that before it rains, water is disposed off to the channels. After heavy rain, the cats and dogs are caught offguard and drown on these channels. Third story comes from norse mythology. Odin is the god of storms, apparently he is also surrounded by dogs; and dogs represent the wind; while witches comes as cats and they represent the rain. Another is from Latin as it means cata doxas which means something you didnt expect to happen or something unusual. It is really weird. Linguists are still studying where this phrase came from. hehehe. I hope i was able to satisfy your curiousity.
